Match Report

The Hampstead [Town] forwards ran riot in their Athenian League game with Enfield, and confirmed the good opinion established by other recent displays. In winning by eight goals to one, Hampstead put up a new record, this being the highest score they have ever registered in a league match.

The game was by no means as one sided as the score would seem to indicate. Indeed, the exchanges were fairly even, but whereas Hampstead took advantage of every opportunity that came their way, the visiting forwards generally missed the target. Cecil Wise, exhibiting form reminiscent of his brilliant international year, scored five splendid goals. R.J. Kirby got a couple, and G.F. Howell, operating well on the left wing as usual, netted a good one. In the early stages Lewis Smith missed with a penalty for the second week in succession. F.P. Esser, who has been doing well with the reserves, got his chance with the senior eleven through the enforced absence of McCracken, injured in the previous game. He operated in good style and made a many fine saves, one in particular in the first half deserving special commendation. He showed himself to be a player of promise.

This success gives Hampstead a welcome lift in the League table, and the score places their goal average well on the right side.
