On Good Friday afternoon Hampstead entertained Barking [Town], the Amateur Cup finalists, at Claremont-road, and lost two valuable points by the odd goal in five. Hampstead were without Anderson, Pease and Shearcroft, whilst Barking fielded their full side.

Hampstead was soon in arrears. Following a scramble in the goal-mouth Guyton scored for Barking after five minutes play. Following this early set-back Hampstead took up the attack and from a neat pass by Smith, Smy sent in a terrific cross shot which left McCracken helpless.

Barking, however, soon took the lead again, Scarborough sending in a weak shot which Trevers stoppped, but in picking up the ball to kick clear he let it drop out of his hands over the line. T. Scarborough, Barking's centre-forward, who scored seven goals in one match a fortnight ago, was well watched by W.G. Gudgeon, who was deputising for Pease, he being particularly prominent with his head. Barking went further ahead following a run and centre on the left by Lucas, Hawkins heading into the net. Hampstead did not despair and during one of their attacks Smy was brought down in the penalty area when about to shoot. Smy took the spot kick, but McCracken, who seems to rise to the occasion against his old club, made a great save, half-time arriving with Barking leading 3-1.

The second half was of the end-to-end type of play, both goalkeepers having plenty to do. McCracken, however, was lucky when a shot from Smy hit the inside of an upright. Harvey, however, found the net twenty minutes before the end, shooting through a crowd of players. Hampstead then fought hard for an equaliser, but they had no luck and can consider themselves very unlucky not to have taken one point.

For Hampstead Parsons played well, as also did Smy in his unusual position of centre-forward, whilst Gudgeon showed promise of developing into a clever half-back, and should be persevered with. For Barking Vargo, Young and Carmen were prominent.
