Match Report

Golders Green's team for their meeting with Barnet on Saturday included the new centre-forward, R. Graves, who held the front line together well, though he did not get a lot of chances to show hia quality. Walker appeared at inside-left again after a week's absence on League duty, and Johnny Browne returned to inside-right, Breagan taking over at right-half.

Barnet were without L.C. Finch, who was suffering from a chill, and his deputy was F.G. Thomas, who was to have turned out with the reserves.

Barnet, who won the toss, made the tactical error of playing uphill and against the wind and sun. After the change over, the sun had disappeared and the wind changed to some extent.

Golders Green were quickly on the offensive, and Browne put in a good shot which led to a corner. Leahy forced another corner, and Kimber had to clear from Graves. Barnet carried out some dangerous raids on both wings, and Wheeler tried a long shot which Barlow had to push over the top. Hawkins also shot without success.

W. Boston was injured and had to leave the field, but he soon returned.

The Barnet forwards were quick to seize opportunities, but the Golders Green defence worked well and Golders Green were soon attacking again, F. Boston taking a pass across from Leahy to shoot close outside the upright - a fine attempt, which he repeated shortly afterwards. Marrable was putting in some nice work, both in defence and in support of the attack. Golders Green should have opened the scoring, but their finishing was somewhat weak, and after half an hour of play KELLEHER put Barnet ahead, taking up a pass from Jordan and finishing off with a neat cross-shot into the corner of the net.

Golders Green made great efforts to equalise, and Graves came near to success when, with Barnet appealing for offside, he let fly from close in and hit the post. Browne also took a shot, but Kimber held, and after Leahy had forced a corner Graves drove the ball behind the net.

Jordan and Kelleher were prominent in further attacks by Barnet, and MacFarlane was always ready in front of goal, but Barlow dealt well with the shots that reached him.

At the other end Kimber had to run out to save from Leahy. Then a weak clearance by Wheeler let Walker through, and he passed to F. BOSTON, who got in a good shot to put Golders Green on equal terms.

Almost at once Golders Green secured the lead. Walker started the movement and passed out to Boston, who swung the ball in for BROWNE to score.

After the interval Barnet sought the equaliser, and Barlow was called into action by Jordan, and he saved well from MacFarlane, but Golders Green quickly came into the picture again, and after a clever display of footwork by Breagan, Graves shot over the top. He had another go from a pass by Walker, and Breagan came up again to take a shot at goal.

Golders Green were awarded a free-kick for a foul on Walker. This was taken by Boston, and Leahy headed just below the level of the crossbar, but Hawkins cleared.

Barnet equalised through MacFARLANE, who converted a free-kick taken by Hawkins. Then Golders Green set up a strong attack, in which F. Boston sent in a couple of grand shots, and Kimber also had to save from Graves. Walker tried to run the ball through the defence, and from a corner taken by F. Boston, Marrable drove over the bar.

Play moved to the other end again, and Barlow cleared from Kelleher and MacFarlane, but Golders Green were too strong now and were soon round the visitors' goal again. Leahy, Graves and F. Boston promised well, but the nearest approach to a goal was when Leahy struck the outside of the upright. Golders Green forced two corners, and after another raid by Barnet, led by Thomas and Richardson, LEAHY frestored Golders Green's lead, shooting in off F. Boston's pass.

There were but ten minutes to go, and Golders Green were attacking for most of the time. Three corners came in quick succession, and close on time BROWNE found the mark to give Golders Green their fourth and last goal.
