Match Report

The first round of the Middlesex Charity Cup proved a successful one for Golders Green. Tomlinson, the centre-forward, was responsible for all three goals for Golders Green, while Tufnell Park's only score was recorded by Hart, the Golders Green goalkeeper. He was unfortunate in punching out a good shot from Hodge. It struck the upright and rebounded into goal.

In the Golders Green team R.W. Stroud was at outside-right, and proved a sound player, while in the absence of Fred Boston, E.M. Owen played on the opposite wing, giving a good display of neat football. At left-back there was one alteration to the names as they appeared on the programme, R. Ward taking P. Martinson's place.

The visitors kicked off and quickly started an attacking move, which was countered by the Green's defence. Swinging the ball out to the left wing, Cochrane and Owen made a fast move for the Park goal, but again the defence was sound and the move was thwarted.

Tufnell Park's strong point seemed to be their right wing, and nearly every opening was made from this side. The first thrill of the game came when Halliday and Simpson, the right wingers, made a fast run down, cleverly evading the defence. A long shot from this move by Simpson provided a spectacular save by Hart, who ran out, caught the ball and cleared it.

There was more midfield play for a time, but gradually the Green took the upper hand and forced the visitors back towards their goal. This developed into a fine attack, and the ball passed clear across the field from Stroud to Owen practically in front of the goal. Owen, however, was well marked and the ball went over the line for a goal kick. The Green maintained the pressure, and a little later Ellison received the ball from a throw-in and shot sideways for goal. A neat piece of handwork by Hill saved the situation for Tufnell Park. A moment later Tomlinson received the ball from a pass downfield and made a similar shot, which Hill also stopped.

Tufnell Park attempted to reply to this, but it only resulted in the ball going to the Green half-back line. A long pass forward came to Stroud, and he raced downfield to prevent the ball going out of play. He succeeded and passed to Tomlinson, who shot for goal. The ball wentt wide by only a few inches.

Tuthill, Bustard and Halliday brought off an attacking move which was only frustrated by good co-operating play between Kingswell and Ward, and the ball went back to the Green's forwards. Then a series of passes between Tomlinson, Owen, Cochrane and Stroud gave Hill another chance to show his prowess, and he succeeded in saving the situation.

Golders Green made another attack through Stroud, who made a lightning run downfield, beating four players in succession. He swerved in towards goal and shot, but Hill was ready for him.

Half an hour after play started came the first score, which put the Park in the lead. A well-organised movement brough the forwards close in front of the Green's goal. Hodge shot and Hart unfortunately turned the ball into his own goal.

At the restart Tomlinson tried to break through, but had to shoot before he was able to take proper aim, with the result that the ball went over the bar.

Before half-time Ellison injured his foot in tackle with a Tufnell Park player. He was off the field for a few minutes and had to treat his foot gently for some time.

After half-time Golders Green went away to a flying start with a swift attack. Owen took the ball down the wing and centred to Tomlinson, who scored.

The Park attacked fiercely and kept Hart busy. This time he made no mistakes and cleared the ball three times in quick succession.

Golders Green drew ahead only a quarter of an hour before the final whistle with another fine shot from Tomlinson, and this was followed a few moments later by the third goal, also from the centre-forward, establishing a lead which Tufnell Park could do nothing to reduce.

Altogether, although the teams seemed evenly matched in the first half, Golders Green showed a supremacy in the second half, with a higher turn of speed and better teamwork.
