Match Report

Hendon booked their place in the second round of the FA Cup after two late goals from Dominic Gentle and Bulgarian Bontcho Guentchev, gave Hendon a 2-0 win. Frank Murphy included 6 players who started the Hendon vs. Bath tie last season, in this tie. The game was also notable as the two opposing captains were brothers, Paul getting the better of his older brother Colin.

In front of Baths biggest home gate of the season, the game kicked off in torrential rain and strong winds. Hendon sat back for the first 25 minutes happy to soak up the pressure and transfer the ball quickly to the front pairing of Paul Whitmarsh and Dominic Gentle. Although Bath enjoyed the greater possession, they seemed to lack a cutting edge and the outstanding back four of White, Clarke, Towler and Fitzgerald were rarely stretched.

Midway through the first half Mike Davis, who was to cause Simon Clarke and Dale Binns problems all afternoon on the Bath right hand side, got in behind Clarke and his low angled drive from 15 yards struck the post and rebounded to a Green shirt. This seemed to wake Hendon up enabling Jon Daly and Freddie Hyatt to prompt from Midfield with little success however as Bath's back four appeared to be even stronger than Hendon's.

Hendon began the second half in determined fashion as Dale Binns and Marvyn Watson started running at the Bath full backs. Watson in particular was unfortunate as he was up against the former Welsh International and Bath's player-manager Paul Bodin. Whitmarsh and Gentle were beginning to acquire the service on which they thrive but at the same time, Bath still appeared dangerous on the counter attack.

Chances were few and far between at both ends as defences were still on top. Gary McCann in the Hendon goal made three or four excellent claims from dangerous crosses but didnt have a direct shot to save during the whole game. Elliot Jackson in the Bath goal looked less secure on balls entering his box but again had no direct shot to save.

The deadlock was eventually broken after 88 minutes when sub Jason McKoy got in behind Paul Bodin and pulled the ball back perfectly for Dominic Gentle to plant a diving header into the bottom corner of the net from 10 yards.

Right from the kick off, Bath dangerman Mike Davis went on a mazy run and appeared to be upended in the penalty area. The referee (Mr S.Castle) ruled that there was no infringement much to the amazement of both sets of supporters. Paul Whitmarsh was replaced by Bontcho Guentchev in the first minute of injury time and in the 94th minute Gentle laid a perfect ball through for the Bulgarian who confidently stroked the ball past Jackson into the bottom corner from 15 yards out.

That goal turned out to be effectively the last kick of the game as the referee blew for time almost straight after kick off. As Bath trudged off having lost their unbeaten record in all competitions this season, the fans, players, management and directors of Hendon were all celebrating their reaching the 2nd round proper for the second time in three years.
