Hendon continued their recent good home form with another important win on Saturday afternoon. It was Ramsgate who were on the receiving end as the Greens ran out 3-1 winners over their relegation rivals.
Gary McCann made two changes to the starting line-up with Craig Vargas and Glenn Garner coming into the side in place of James Bent and Sam Byfield who both dropped down to the bench.
The first chance of the half came in the 5th minute when Kevin Maclaren crossed the ball from the left wing into the box, but Garner couldn't quite beat Ramsgate keeper Jamie Turner to the ball.
Ramsgate's small band of travelling supporters were one of the most vocal to visit Hendon this season, and they nearly had something to cheer about ten minutes later, but Steffan Ball's free kick flew over the bar. Hendon then broke away and released Peter Dean down the right hand side. He broke into the box and fired a shot across goal which Turner smothered at the second attempt.
Some good work from Maclaren and Dean set up Sam Collins, but his shot went narrowly wide of the post with Turner beaten. Meanwhile at the other end Ball fired a fine overhead effort at goal which required a fine save from Will Viner.
The opening goal of the game came in the 43rd minute. Jamie Busby received the ball in midfield and he broke forward. He spotted the run of Garner, who had just picked up a knock, and put in an inch perfect pass. Garner, whose movement was restricted by the injury, latched onto the ball and fired a fine shot into the net to give the Greens the lead.
Garner eventually left the field ten minutes into the second half to a loud ovation from the Hendon fans and was replaced by James Bent.
Early in the second period Warren Schulz had a good chance to score, but he fired his volley well over the bar. The Greens were beginning to look dangerous on the counter attack and a fine move involving Maclaren, Dean and Collins set up Busby who was unfortunate to see his shot well saved by Turner. Moments later Mark Kirby headed a free kick into the box to Bent, who in turn set up Lee O'Leary who forced Turner into another good save.
In the 65th minute, Hendon doubled their lead. Mark Kirby sent a superb pass out of defence into the path of James Bent, who beat the offside trap beautifully. Bent took the ball down towards the goalline and delivered a cross into the box which Sam Collins slammed into the net for his second goal in as many games.
Three minutes later Ramsgate were back in the game. Danny Walder fired a free-kick towards the far post, and the flight of the ball appeared to deceive Viner. This allowed Nick Davis to head the ball home just inside the post.
However, the Greens were determined not to let the lead slip and defended solidly and were looking increasingly dangerous going forward as Ramsgate chased the game. In the 76th minute Mark Kirby headed a Collins free kick just wide, whilst shortly afterwards Bent launched another counter attack but his cross just eluded a number of Hendon players in the box.
In the final minute of normal time, Ramsgate caused problems in the Hendon goalmouth, but James Parker was able to head the ball up for Viner to claim. Viner launched the ball downfield, and Bent found Busby in midfield. The latter player carried the ball into the box and was tripped by Ben Laslett as he did so.
The referee had no option but to award a spot kick, and it should be said there was no protest from any of the Ramsgate players. Busby dusted himself down and placed the ball on the spot, and made no mistake as he sent Turner the wrong way to score his sixth goal in five games and in turn secure the three points for the Greens.
In the final minute of stoppage time, Maclaren had a chance to make the scoreline even more comfortable, but his excellent strike arrowed just the wrong side of the post.
The result leaves Hendon in 19th place in the table, just one point away from the safety zone.
