Two poor defensive mistakes in three minutes cost Hendon their chance to retain the Full Members Cup for the 3rd year running.
The first half between the Dons and the Stones was quite even, with some fairly good half chances falling to each side. Hyatt shot wide for the Dons, and a well struck shot from a short corner seemed goal-bound, but it instead struck a bemused Wealdstone player on the back of his head.
Wealdstone for their part had a few chances of their own, and forced a good save out of McCann, as well winning several corners.
The second half had far more action in it, and all four goals came early in this period. The Dons struck after around ten minutes with a Fitzgerald goal, and only five minutes or so afterwards Gentle added a second.
Hendon however became too complacent, and Wealdstone struck back, with two goals in three minutes. The rest of the half was a quite dour affair, with poor passing and communication from the Dons breaking up most of their chances, whilst Wealdstone had several half chances, that set a few hearts beating.
The match went into extra time, and Wealdstone probably had the best of it, starting out brightly, and running over the Dons quite well. Three or four more half chances fell to the Stones, the best of which was struck straight at McCann. Hendon however improved quite dramatically in the second half of extra time, and two of their best chances fell to Whitmarsh, but both were struck over the bar.
After no goals in extra time, penalties beckoned, and McCann saved Wealdstone's first. Howard scored the first, followed by two Dons misses, a Stones goal, and a miss for the side in Yellow. Whitmarsh stepped up at 2-1 down, and confidently struck the ball, in effect ending his goal famine of just over 2 months. The next two penalties went in, leaving the score at 3-3 after all ten penalties, sending the shoot out into sudden death.
For Hendon, Sakala defied most people's expectations by scoring from the spot and Clarke also scored. Jessie Hall was next up, and amid taunts from Wealdstone fans, having only left the Stones three weeks ago, scored confidently. The Stones then scored to make it 7-6 to the Yellows, and Daly stepped up, only to have his penalty saved by Noel Imber, who before this game had never saved a penalty in his career, Wealdstone sending the holders out of the Full Members Cup in the first round.
