Hendon looked the more likely victors early on in this poor game, but Canvey came back later on, and eventually it could have gone either way. Hendon started with a changed line-up from last weeks draw with Slough, Sakala, Watson and Clarke all coming in for Whitmarsh, Hyatt and Howard. There were also a number of positional changes.
The early part of the game was dominated by Hendon, and possession football, but few chances were created as Canvey's defence was hard to break down. One or two shots were easily saved by Harrison, and he also calmly dealt with any corners that came his way. Dons' fans felt a little aggrieved about ten minutes into the game, when the ever improving Sakala was pulled to the ground twice, the first time about to get a shot in on goal. All appeals were waved away however.
Hendon also had one or two other reasonable chances, one where Towler had a shot cleared off the line comfortably, and another where Haule managed to get a high snap shot in, but Harrison easily caught the ball just above his head.
Canvey found themselves with few chances, and most of those that they did have were shots from outside the area, most of which went wide, but one or two had to be caught by McCann, who avoided kicking as far as possible. Towards the end of the half, Canvey had a string of corners, but nothing came of them - despite one or two scrambles Hendon cleared comfortable.
Several Hendon players were booked, most notably Warren Kelly for an off the ball incident before a free-kick, in which a yellow shirted player went sprawling to the ground.
The second half was little better, with even fewer chances being created, and neither keeper being tested. McCann was nearly dispossessed from a backpass, but the ball went off for a corner. Mid-way through the half ,Hendon manager Frank Murphy was sent from the dug-out and problems were compounded as an attempted tackle from White left Towler limping off injured.
Both teams made changes to swing the tie their way, but neither side looked convincing enough to score, both defences keeping well on top of the game.
