Match Report

Manager Gary McCann was unsure if a riveting game at Longmead was a case of two points dropped or one point gained, commenting that improved efficiency at both ends of the pitch would have seen the Greens leave Kent with all three points. A pulsating match saw Tonbridge Angels and Hendon both squander leads, the 3-3 score line hardly doing justice to the huge number of chances that both sides carved out.

The two goalkeepers played a pivotal role in the game. First to take centre stage was Tonbridge's Kyle Merson. After a cross was swung into the Tonbridge box, Lee O'Leary directed a fairly innocuous header towards the goal. Instead of completing what appeared to be a fairly routine catch, Merson instead pawed the ball into the goal, granting the visitors the lead inside the first quarter of an hour.

Hendon doubled their lead on the half hour. Leon Smith was played through a long way from goal. His powerful run took him past the last Tonbridge defender and presented him with a one-on-one with Merson. Again, the keeper might feel that he could have done better, pushing Smith's shot onto the post before the grateful striker smashed the loose ball home.

The home side were finally prompted into action, launching a more sustained period of pressure as the second half approached. The pressure, combined with the usual defensive frailty from Hendon, saw the home side claw two goals back in the final minutes of the first half. The first goal was taken by Billy Medlock, unmarked in the box, who was found by a well-crafted cross that he headed in past Ben McNamara in the Hendon goal.

McNamara was at fault for the second goal, a bizarre affair which created much debate on the terraces. Having made a save from another Tonbridge attack, McNamara - seeking to launch a quick dropkick up the pitch - pushed the retreating Medlock in the back with the ball. The momentum of the push saw the ball spill from McNamara's grasp and trickle over the line. After a brief consultation with his assistant, the referee awarded the goal and also booked McNamara for protesting a little too vigorously. All square at 2-2 at the break.

Tonbridge, buoyed by their recovery, began the second half strongly. Hendon, who had replaced Sam Flegg with Casey MacLaren at halftime, were soon behind. McNamara, who had dealt with aerial balls with aplomb for much of the first half, failed to collect a cross, dropping the ball in the penalty area. Dee Okojie collected the ball and hit a hopeful cross/shot towards the goal. The ball eluded the Hendon keeper and defenders and looped into the top corner.

Hendon responded by replacing Andre Da Costa with Richard Worrell, the Greens grabbing an equalizer shortly thereafter. A promising Hendon attack saw the ball bounce outside the area after being cleared by a Tonbridge defender. The ball was met by Casey Maclaren who launched one of his trademark volleyed pile drivers into the Tonbridge net. Hendon could have retaken the lead, were it not for a magical save from Merson, acrobatically tipping away a shot from James Fisher. Hendon had myriad further chances to snatch a victory, with Murphy, Worrell and Dave Diedhiou all coming close for Hendon.

Tonbridge also had plenty of chances, with a number of shots flying over and McNamara redeeming himself with a number of smart stops. The game drew to a close, with both sides no doubt feeling that they could have won the fixture. Nonetheless, a decent crowd was thoroughly entertained and Hendon set off for north-west London with the first point they have ever gained at Longmead.
