Match Report

Hendon completed their first Ryman League double of the season with a facile 5-2 demolition of struggling Thamesmead Town. It was the Greens' first home League win at Earslmead since April 2009, though, of course, Hendon only returned to Harrow at the start of this season.

The Hendon starting 11 was exactly the same as the one to win at Cray and nine of the 11 had started when the Greens trounced Mead 4-0 on the opening day of the season. On the bench Isaiah Rankin came in for Aaron Morgan, but he was not used.

By comparison Thamesmead, who had won only two of their first 13 matches and were off the bottom of the table on goal difference, have rebuilt their squad to the extent that goalkeeper Robert Budd, full-back Sean Roberts and striker Theo Fairweather-Johnson were the only three to start in the return fixture.

Maybe the lack of familiarity was part of the visitors' problem because they were at sixes and sevens throughout the afternoon, never more so that in the first 15 minutes of each half. It took just four minutes for Hendon to capitalise.

A raid down the right side gave Mead two chances to clear the danger, but they failed to do so. When the ball was scuffed towards Tony Taggart, no one came to close him down so he curled a neat 20-yard shot beyond Budd's dive.

Almost immediately after the restart, Casey Maclaren was harshly penalised for sliding in to clear the ball just outside his penalty area. There is no question he made contact with Mikel Saurez, but the ball was already five yards from where Maclaren kicked the ball. Jordan Hibbert's drive went straight into the wall Hendon defensive and was cleared.

A few minutes later, there was a worrying sight as the referee was spotted lying on the ground in clear discomfort. He had collided with a player some yards from the action as everyone moved downfield from the Hendon penalty area. After receiving treatment from both physios, the referee was able to continue.

For all of the Greens domination, there were few clear goalscoring opportunities for them. Chris Seeby made an excellent run, but his final effort was a tame one.

And then, out of almost nothing, Thamesmead were given two chances to get back in to the game. A challenge on Theo Fairweather-Johnson was ruled a foul and a penalty though, again, it seemed as if the ball was played before there was any contact with a blue-shirted player.

Javilon Campbell took responsibility for the spot-kick, but Berkley Laurencin produced a superb save, pushing the ball against the post. The rebound seemed to roll to Fairweather-Johnson, but Jack Bennett made an excellent intervention.

Both sets of players trotted back towards the Hendon goal in readiness for a corner, the referee and his assistant were adamant - and alone - in thinking it was a goal kick. Two minutes later, a terrible miskick by Laurencin gifted a chance to Campbell, 22 yards out. He took aim and fired over the crossbar.

This galvanised Hendon back into action and, in the 38th minute a teasing Taggart cross was met by Louis, who had lost his marker. Louis's effort was on he target, but Budd made a brilliant block.

Three minutes later, James Fisher brought the ball out of defence. No player tried to close him down, so Fisher sent a deep cross to beyond the far post.

Taggart ghosted in and knocked the ball back towards goal, where Louis was waiting to pounce. This time Budd was unable to stop the ball and Hendon had what had to be considered a deserved two-goal half-time lead.

Three minutes into the second half, a chaotic piece of defending resulted with the ball ending up in the net and Louis was again the man being congratulated. It took his tally for the season to 11 - and we are still in October - two more than any Hendon player achieved in 2012–13.

Thamesmead were being run ragged with Lee O'Leary and Kevin Maclaren dominating the midfield. Such was the time and space they enjoyed it seemed as if there were a couple more green shirts on the pitch than blue.

Three became four just before the hour mark when Carl McCluskey crossed, Louis headed goalwards and Dave Diedhiou arrived at the far post to apply the coup de grace from less than two yards out. A couple of Mead defenders looked more in hope than expectation at the assistant referee but there was no flag.

It was now too easy for Hendon, who replaced Taggart and McCluskey with Scott Cousins and Anthony Thomas after 66 minutes and Bennett with Michael Murray. Bennett and Taggart had given Thamesmead fits all afternoon and, without them, Hendon didn't look as effective.

The first shot across the Hendon bows came in the 69th minute when Olalekan Bankole tried his luck from 25 yards. It was an excellent strike, but not good enough to beat Laurencin, who made a fine save above his head.

The lesson wasn't learned because, with 11 minutes to go, Thamesmead were awarded a second penalty when Tyrus Gordon-Young - a half-time replacement for Campbell - went over Cousins' foot. From one side of the ground it looked a clear trip; from the other, it seemed that the Thamesmead player hooked his leg around the Hendon player.

Either way, Mead skipper Lewis Tozer stepped up and sent Laurencin the wrong way. Had the goalkeeper dived to his left, as he had with the earlier spot kick, he might have been able to save.

Louis was twice greedy in good positions - it was almost understandable as he chased a hat-trick. Thamesmead also were fortunate when another effort went inches wide of the far post with Budd beaten.

Murray had a very good chance to score in the 85th minute when he timed his run perfectly to meet a cross from Seeby. The header was both powerful and well-directed, but Budd was equal to it, pulling off another good save.

In the 88th minute Budd was well beaten as Hendon scored their fifth goal and it was a beauty. The ball came to Thomas without a defender near him. He took aim from well outside the penalty area and bent the ball just inside the far post.

A little bit of the gloss was taken out of the victory two minutes into additional time when Thamesmead scored a second consolation goal. A misplaced Hendon pass in midfield led to a counter-attack, but the Greens had two or three chances to clear the ball, but made a mess of dealing with the danger.

Daniel Ailey, another of the Mead substitutes, shot from just inside the penalty area. The pitch was greasy, but Laurencin couldn't get down in time to complete the save as the ball squirmed under his body and trickled just inside the near post.
