Match Report

Hendon and Wealdstone played out an entertaining goalless draw at Earlsmead on Monday night. It is a mark of the quality of the Greens' performance, in both this game and the one at Grosvenor Vale last month, that it was the Stones who were happier to have taken a single point from both games.

The match turned out to be the 100th draw - in 502 matches - during manager Gary McCann's time in charge.

The Greens reshuffled their troops again, so there were three changes, all in more advanced positions. Lee O'Leary, Adam Wallace and Jose Figura came in for Archange Nkumu, Anthony Thomas and Dave Diedhiou. Wealdstone were also forced to make a few changes with their most notable absentee being influential midfielder Glen Little.

Almost all of the controversy came in the first thirty minutes. In just the sixth minute Wealdstone were perhaps fortunate to keep 11 men on the field. A through ball saw Wallace run behind Sean Cronin with only Jonathan North to beat.

The ball bounced high and Wallace headed the ball over the advancing goalkeeper. If there was contact between the players it was minimal, but Wallace stumbled on landing and ended up face down in the penalty area.

North was insistent that there was none or tiny contact, but he was equally adamant that Wallace had not simulated contact or dived. At no time did he, or any of the tracking Wealdstone players, approach the striker to accuse him of cheating.

When they referee blew his whistle, North's shoulders sagged as he expected to be penalised, with a red card the only obvious outcome. Instead it was Wallace who saw yellow for simulation.

Twelve minutes later, the massed band of visiting fans were baying for blood when a ball into the penalty area appeared to strike Sam Flegg on the arm. Flegg admitted, after the game, that he felt it was probably handball, but there was no whistle and Hendon a rather lucky escape.

Wealdstone were forced to make an early change when the hugely influential Scott McGleish went off. He had been held up in traffic on the way to the ground and admitted to feeling unwell before the match, After half an hour he gave up the unequal struggle and Jay Siva replaced him.

Three minutes later, there was another key incident in a penalty area. Hendon forced a corner on the right side. Wealdstone, distinctly aware of the Greens' innovative moves, stuck close to every one in a home shirt.

When the corner came over, O'Leary tried to break free of the attentions of two markers but was penalised for a foul.

Just before half-time, the visiting fans were, once more, enraged when an incident in the Hendon penalty area went against them, not that a Hendon player had committed a foul, but merely that one of their forwards had been penalised.

At the start of the second, Hendon attacked Wealdstone with renewed vigour. The Stones were rattled as O'Leary, Michael Bryan and Figura probed, assisted by overlapping runs from both Chris Seeby and Jack Bennett.

And the yellow rearguard was nearly breached when Leon Smith and Wallace combined to leave North hopelessly out of position and set up Figura just beyond the far post. If he had struck the ball first time, Figura would surely have scored, but he took a moment to steady himself and his effort was blocked on the line by a brilliant intervention from James Hammond.

Joe McDonnell then made an outstanding save at the other end to keep out a drive from former Hendon midfielder Elliott Godfrey. The goalkeeper then had to be quickly off line to clear a through ball which Charlie Penny was chasing.

Bennett then tried his luck with an angled drive. North made the save, but the ball bounced down in front of him. Before Smith could reach the rebound, however, North had fallen back on the ball.

As Hendon continued to force the pace, Smith couldn't keep a header down as he outjumped the Stones defence. He then had a great chance to open the scoring when he found himself 30 yards from goal and the Wealdstone defence struggling to get back to cover.

Aware of North's talent as a shot-stopper, Smith elected to go further forward before trying to score, and he was unable to even get off a shot. A couple of minutes later Anthony Thomas came on to replace him.

Hendon had still to be aware of the threat posed by Wealdstone, especially from Tom Pett. Casey Maclaren and Flegg, who were singled out for special praise by the manager after the game, did a good job in keeping Penny, Pett and Carl McCluskey quiet.

It would be unfair to call the game dour - even though clear goalscoring chances were at a premium. There was clearly tension in the air, but not a threatening atmosphere and the match was played in great spirit. And, it must be said, with one mistake or moment of individual brilliance likely to decide the outcome, especially in the final quarter, it was an eminently watchable affair.

Two efforts from Wealdstone narrowly missed the Hendon goal, while Seeby felt he should have done better with a header from a Bryan corner. However, two Stones defenders did just enough to deny him the chance to direct his header on target.

The last Hendon chance, in the 88th minute, fell to Thomas with a free-kick 30 yards out. Maybe Michael Murray, coming off the bench might have done better, but the strike from Thomas had the power, if not the angle to beat North, who made the save.
