Match Report

An injury time equaliser earnt Potters Bar Town a replay against Hendon in the FA Cup First Qualifying Round on Saturday afternoon. The replay will take place on Tuesday evening at Potters Bar.

It was a game that Hendon should have won comfortably, and whilst the Greens had more of the play, as in previous games this season, they left their supporters frustrated in the final third.

Gary McCann made three changes to the starting line up, with Sean Thomas, Michael Murray and Kevin Maclaren coming in for Mo Maan, James Parker and Bradley Wadkins, the latter dropping to the bench.

Hendon certainly started the brighter of the two sides, with Jack Mazzone having two chances in the opening five minutes, the first going wide of the target, and the second directed straight at Ed Thompson between the sticks. Shortly afterwards, Chris Doyle fired wide for the visitors.

In the 13th minute Kevin Maclaren put in an excellent ball over the top of the defence, but Mazzone was unable to stretch quite far enough to get a decisive touch on the ball. This was a sign of things to come for the Greens in the final third throughout the game.

Moments later, Michael Murray's header was directed straight at the keeper, and Dean Cracknell was unable to get on to the loose ball before it was cleared.

In the 21st minute, Potters Bar had a chance of their own, but their free kick, taken by Doyle, was comfortably saved by Thomas, making his first start of the season.

Hendon's best chance of the first half came just before the half-hour mark when Scott Shulton intercepted the ball in midfield, and slid the ball into the path of Mazzone, but whilst the youngster fired off a good shot, Thompson was on hand to make the save. Shortly afterwards, Shulton himself missed a chance when he shot wide.

The Green's were very fortunate to still have a full compliment of players, when Kevin Maclaren was cautioned for a challenge in which his studs were showing, and he went over the ball. The fact that he got a touch to the ball probably got him off the hook.

Potters Bar were forced to reshuffle shortly before half time when Louis Lavers went off with a head injury and had to be replaced by Rob Magwood. There was time still for Mazzone and Shulton to put further chances wide of the target.

At half-time the Greens made a change between the sticks, with Berkley Laurencin, also making his first appearance of the campaign, replacing Sean Thomas who had taken a knock in a collision during the first half.

Almost immediately Laurencin was called into action as he made a smart save at the feet of Cole Penny. Meanwhile, at the other end a good passing move involving Murray and Shulton led to the ball going wide of the goal once again, Mazzone missing another chance.

However, in the 53rd minute the deadlock was broken when the ball fell to Casey Maclaren about 20 yards from goal, and the midfielder had no hesitation in slamming the ball past Thompson and into the net.

Three minutes later the Greens had a penalty shout turned down when Mazzone was fouled near the edge of the area. The referee ruled that the offence was just outside the box, but nothing came of the free-kick.

On the hour mark, Potters Bar were almost gifted a goal when Shulton gave away possession, but he was relieved when the visiting skipper, Danny Johnson, saw his shot fly narrowly over the bar.

As the second half continued, Potters Bar began to get more control of the game with Josh Urquhart seeing his shot go just wide of the goal.

In the 69th minute, Hendon should have made the game secure when they were awarded a penalty. A shot was handled on the line by a defender, and the referee pointed to the spot. It was difficult for the official to identify who the hand belonged to, even though it was definitely one attached to a yellow shirt, so no further sanction was forthcoming. Quite rightly, the referee avoided a situation where he may have dismissed the wrong player. However, the game wasn't secured as Scott Shulton's penalty was comfortably saved by Thompson.

In the final ten minutes, Hendon had two further chances, but Howard Hall and Greg Ngoyi both saw their headed efforts miss the target, whilst Liam Coles swerving shot was very well saved by Laurencin at the other end.

However, the Greens were made to pay for not scoring more goals in stoppage time. A free-kick was given away midway in the Hendon half, and Urquhart delivered the ball into the box. Hendon were unable to clear the ball, and Wesley Beckles was able to bundle the ball home from close range to earn his club a replay.

Whilst the Greens had probably done enough in the game to win it they are certainly not firing on all cylinders at the moment. They will need to improve considerably if they are to progress to the next round of the competition.
