The Athenian League match between Barnet and Hampstead on Saturday at Barnet was unfortunately spoiled by fog, and the referee had no other course than to stop the game soon after half-time.
It was a great disappointment to the spectators, as the match had been a fine one under the conditions.
Hampstead kicked off, and for the first ten minutes appeared to be right off colour, the Barnet forwards taking charge of the game, and had it not been for splendid goalkeeping by Smith they would have scored three or four goals.
Sparrow opened the scoring, after Bloxham had miskicked in front of goal. This reverse seemed to have a good effect on Hampstead, and during the remainder of the half they more than held their own. Levy put across several good centres, which, had it not been for Barnet's fine defence, would certainly have been improved upon. Smy sent in several first-time shots without success, as also Sparrow and Darvill at the other end.
The teams changed over without leaving the field at half-time, but it was very soon impossible to see the goal-posts from the half-way line, and the game was soon abandoned.
For Hampstead, Shearcroft, in his unaccustomed position of centre-half, was the outstanding player, some of his long passes to the wings being beautifully timed. Smith, whose work has already been referred to, Bloxham, Shorland, Wardlaw and Smy were the pick of the remainder. For Barnet, Jones, Fletcher, Sutton and Sparrow were the bet of a well-balanced side.
