Hampstead opened their season with a visit on Saturday to Cambridge Town, whom they easily defeated by eight goals to three, Evans, at centre-forward, starting the season well by scoring four times.
The game had only been in progress one minute when Evans opened the score with a first-time shot from a centre by Butler, and four minutes later Evans headed through a corner kick well placed by Breagan. After eight minutes' play Rowe scored with a hard ground shot from a centre by Breagan. Hampstead continued to press, and after twenty minutes another goal followed clever play by Evans, who squared the ball for Breagan to score the fourth. Cambridge then tried hard to reduce the lead, and their centre-forward put in a hard drive, but Cornell, throwing himself full length, brought off a great save. Hampstead quickly took the play to the other end and Rowe cleverly defeated the Cambridge defence and passed the ball to Butland to score the fifth. Just before the interval Bucci made a great run from the half-way line and then passed to Evans, who scored with a fine hook shot.
Immediately after the restart Butland headed the seventh from a centre by Rowe.
Cambridge were then awarded a penalty and scored their first goal from the spot kick. Evans then scored Hampstead's last goal from a centre by Breagan.
Cambridge continued to try and reduce the lead, which they did by scoring two further goals, one following a good run through the middle, and the other just before the finish following a corner.
The outstanding player on the field was Bucci, at left-half.
