Many supporters of Hampstead Town visited Wimbledon on Saturday in the hope of seeing their favourites win Athenian League points, and thus improve their chances for the championship. But they had the biggest disappointment of the season. Not only did Wimbledon win, but it had to be admitted that Hampstead were deservedly beaten. In hardly a match this season have they played so poorly. The team was as usual, with the exception that H.G. Baxter re-appeared once more at left back.
Hampstead started fairly well, and had the satisfaction, after twenty minutes, of scoring the first goal, Wise doing the needful. The joy of their supporters, however, was short-lived, as a minute or two later Cannon equalised. Wise put in two or three wonderful shots, but for the greater part of the first half Wimbledon pressed, and Evans, Hampstead's goalkeeper, must be congratulated on the way he kept the opposing forwards at bay. Somme of his saves bordered on the miraculous. Just before half-time Cotton, Wimbledon's new centre-forward, put his side ahead.
The second half had not long run its course when Cotton, who was playing a remarkably good game, scored again, and it became a case of Hampstead being practically smothered. Cotton obtained two more goals, and then, in the closing stages, Wise in some degree revived Hampstead's drooping spirits by putting the ball in the net.
In all departments, except perhaps in goal, Wimbledon proved the stronger. The forwards played with rare dash, and the defence was sound, Allwright, an old Hampstead player, doing excellent work after the first quarter of an hour.
On the home ground at Child's Hill, Hampstead's London League eleven defeated Metropolitan Railway by four goals to one.
A FATEFUL DAY.
The playing resouces of the Hampstead [Town] club will be taxed to their utmost tomorrow (Saturday), when three teams will have to be fielded in important away games. Metrogas will be visited at the Old Kent-road ground in the final Athenian League match, Botwell Mission will be met on the Brentford ground in the final of the Middlesex Charity Cup, and Blackwall will be opposed in the last of the London League games.
The kick-off in each case is 3.30.
