Over 4,000 people - a record crowd - were on the Hampstead Town ground in Child's Hill-lane [sic] on Saturday, the attraction being an F.A. Cup-tie with Wealdstone. This large attendance shows the growing interest in local amateur football, in which Hampstead Town is daily playing a more conspicuous part. Although so many paid for admission, the arrangements in the enclosure were so admirable that all enjoyed a perfect view of the game. There is good and ample accommodation for at least twice the number.
A thoroughly enjoyable exhibition of clean, clever and robust football was witnessed, with Hampstead victorious by the narrow margin of one goal to nil. It was anticipated that Wealdstone would furnish a stiff task, and the result proves the surmise to have been correct. A.H. Haskell, the visiting goalkeeper, played so well, making miraculous saves, throughout the game, and was so well supported by the Wealdstone defence generally, that the efforts of the Hampstead forward combination appeared doomed to failure. Although Hampstead predominated in attack and monopolised the shooting, it was well on in the second half before they scored the winning goal. Haskell saved what looked like a certain goal at the expense of a corner, and from the resultant centre by F.W. Packham the ball was neatly gathered by R. Kirby, who shot close in. Towards the close Wealdstone were unlucky with a shot which rebounded from an upright with Evans in the Hampstead goal unplaced.
