Match Report

From the Hendon & Finchley Times, 16th February 1923 :

At Southall in the Athenian League, Hampstead [Town] put up their best display so far, extracted the first point conceded by the homesters on their own ground this season, and generally did everything to justify and enhance the reputation they have enjoyed in the past, but which had suffered somewhat by their poor show in the early part of the season. That youth will be served was well demonstrated by this strenuous encounter, and Hampstead's youngsters, notably E.T. McCracken (goal), J. Humphries (back), L Evershed, Lewis Smith, and W.C. Little (halves), Travers Day, F. Young, A. Butcher and G.F. Howell (forwards) showed not only remarkably fine speed and staying powers, but also a rapidly developing grasp of the fine points of the game.

C. Wise scored for Hampstead in the first five minutes, and this lead was retained until thirty minutes after the interval, when B. Alford netted for Southall. Both sides experienced hard luck with scoring chances, but the 1-1 draw accurately reflected the general play.

From the West Middlesex Gazette, 17 February 1923 :

In spite of the wretched weather, a good game was witnessed on the Western-road enclosure on Saturday, when Southall entertained Hampstead Town, the result being a draw 1-1. On the run of play Southall should have won. Excepting the first ten minutes, when Hampstead Town predominated and scored an early goal, the home team had the better of the game. The weather affected the gate, the spectators probably numbering less than a thousand.

On a very slippery ground and in a drizzling rain, Hampstead Town kicked off and were early prominent. They displayed good football and by swinging the ball about freely developed some dangerous attacks. A bright movement by Heard and Hunt brought relief to the home defence and ended in a smart ground shot from Heard, which McCracken had some difficulty in holding. Hampstead Town soon returned and after two minutes' play opened the scoring with a soft goal. Cantrell essayed a long cross shot that was much too wide and to all appearances would go out on the further side of the posts, but the ball swerved in to the feet of the opposite winger, and as Holding ran out in a late effort to save the situation, Howell tapped the ball to Wise, who shot into an empty goal. Southall were slower in settling down, the forwards seeming unable to adapt their play to the conditions, and apart from two clever individual efforts by Alford, the visitors were the more dangerous team during the first fifteen minutes. Wise, who was conspicuous, headed just wide of the posts from an excellent centre by Butcher and a little later came within an ace of scoring again. Southall then began to improve and had an even share of the play, which was very keenly contested. A neat pass by Watts sent Alford away, but his shot was diverted for a corner, Hampstead Town sustaining an appeal for hands in the penalty area. McCracken had to run out to clear a dangerous centre from Hunt, and Wenham dropped a splendid long shot a little the wrong side of the bar. Having gradually assumed the upper hand, Southall set up a strong attack and the visiting defence were often forced to kick out under pressure. During a hot tussle near goal there was another unsuccessful appeal for a penalty for hands against a Hampstead defender. A miskick by Humphries presented Morey with a good chance, but he shot wide. Watts got through but failed to get in his shot before Evershed dashed across and kicked out for a corner. From the flag kick the ball came out to Buttery whose first-time shot crashed against the crossbar with McCracken beaten. Southall were striving determinedly to equalise but were not having the best of luck, another fine attempt by Watts from twenty yards out clearing the bar by inches. At the other end, where the attacks were fewer, but still dangerous, Travers Day had missed a good chance of increasing the lead, and just before the interval, after House had made a smart clearance, Young struck the crossbar with a fine header which Holding could never have saved had it been inches lower. Half-time : Southall, 0 ; Hampstead Town, 1.

Soon after resuming Alford made a brilliant run from near the half-way line, ending with a splendid rising shot, but McCracken brought off an equally fine save, and in the next minute ably gathered a nice long shot from Watts. Southall did the bulk of attacking in this half, the visiting forwards, though always active and threatening, being so securely held by the home halves and backs that it was not until late in the half that Holding was again troubled. Hunt was in the picyure with some fine runs and centres, and Morey also made some good efforts, but the inside men, instaed of shooting at once when in reasonable range either delayed their efforts so long that they were either tackled or their shots charged down, or resorted too short passing, which proved futile. Good chances were missed in this way. The Hampstead goal survived some scrimmaging before ultimately, twenty minutes after the interval, a quick pass by Watts paved the way for Alford to dart through and beat McCracken at close quarters. Hampstead rallied and a vigorous attack led up to a good shot by Young just inside the poat which Holding safely dealt with. Southall returned to the attack and from now until the end made desperate efforts to take the lead, but Hampstead defended stoutly. Alford again broke through but sent over the bar. Just before the end, from a nicely-placed corner by Hunt, Wenham kicked over the ball and missed a splendid chance. Holding saved a long shot from Butcher, and in the last minute Alford got through to score, but the whistle had already gone for offside. Result : Southall, 1 ; Hampstead Town, 1.
