Match Report

As they figured at the bottom of the Athenian League with a record of three defeats from the same number of matches, and only one goal to their credit, not one in a thousand thought Windsor and Eton, newcomers to the League, capable of beating Hampstead Town at Cricklewood, notwithstanding the fact that C. Wise, the captain, was an absentee. But the Royal Borough team won by four goals to one, and, what is more, thoroughly deserved their victory. The visiting club had a slightly different team to that which went under to Chesham in the F.A. Cup the previous week. Hampstead had their usual defence, but there were enforced changes in the front line which, running from right to left, was constituted thus: A.L. Baker, T.W.B. West, Travers Day, A. Barnard, G.F. Howell. Baker has played previously for Brentford and Manchester City; West came from a local junior team as a left back.

Hampstead's defection was mainly a story of missed opportunities owing to weak forward play. The same weakness has been exhibited in other games this season, but the penalty has not been so heavy. The chances that came their way were so frequent and so comparatively easy that victory instead of defeat might have readily been achieved in the first half, whereas the teams crossed over level, H. Powell scoring for the visitors, and West for Hampstead. Disappointing, however, as Hampstead's display had been in the opening half, worse was to follow. The repeated failure of the forwards reacted on the defence, and in the concluding stages B. Gessey, at inside-left, did the hat trick for Windsor and Eton, who thus secured their first League win of the season. Over the second goal there was a little hesitation on the part of Evans, in goal. Had he remained in goal or gone for the ball a fraction earlier he might have saved the goal. The others were well obtained. The shooting was deadly. The extreme wingers, S. Mayo and G. Springall, both speedy men, found good support from the inside men. The Windsor defence was fairly good, but not so good as to throw the Hampstead forward line quite off the balance.

From GLEANINGS FROM SPORTS CLUBS by Rambler

W.E. Brewer, who captained Hampstead Town on Saturday in the absence of C. Wise, was the subject of a commendatory note in "The Star" the other night. We can endorse the comments of our contemporary that Brewer, who has not missed a single game since joining Hampstead Town in September 1920, is a very keen and resourceful player, and that his spoiling tactics are frequently a feature of the games at Cricklewood-lane.
