Last evening Hampstead Town met Barnet in the Athenian League. The teams drew 2-2 early in the season at Barnet. There was a fairly big "gate," and the game was stoutly contested, both teams being well represented. At times much feeling was shown.
Barnet scored the first goal, after play had been in progress about a quarter of an hour, through Packham, and the visitors had the better of the exchanges for a time. On one occasion, from a pass by Butler, at outside right, Wise, the Hampstead captain, tested Standish, Barnet's goalkeeper, severely, and an even better attempt was made by Lewis Smith, the ball being tipped over the bar. From the resultant corner there was a loud appeal for "hands" in the penalty area, but the claim was disallowed. A minute later, however, from another well placed corner, Young headed into goal. The next exciting incident followed a foul on Travers Day in the penalty area. Without stopping at the sound of the whistle Wise put the ball into the net. The referee, however, ordered the penalty kick to be taken, and Lewis Smith failed. This was a stroke of hard luck for Hampstead, who were then playing exceptionally well, and at the interval the scores were 1-1.
Barnet re-opened the game strongly, and Packham, receiving from Beale at outside left, scored easily. A penalty kick for Hampstead was taken by Lewis Smith and Standish saved. The ball, however, went to Smith, who, at the second attempt, put it into the net, thus again equalising the scores. Just before the end Packham got a beautiful goal, and thus gave Barnet the victory by three goals to two.
On the whole Barnet deserved to win. They have a fast forward line, and the Hampstead defenders were often in difficulties.
Tomorrow (Saturday) Hampstead visit St. Albans in the Athenian League.
