Match Report

A huge crowd assembled at Underhill ground, Barnet, yesterday (Thursday) to witness the replay of the divisional final of the English [F.A.] Cup between Barnet and Hampstead [Town], a game full of thrills and incidents ending in a victory for the home side by the odd goal in five.

The visitors were without three of their regular players, Barnes, Irwin and Seabrooke, and Barnet were unable to play Deeks.

Hampstead kicked off with the wind in their favour and the advantage of the slight slope in the ground, and the forwards were soon in prominence, Wise being robbed of the ball when well placed. Play after this became fast and furious, both sides attacking hotly and the ball was flashed from one end to the other. Scoring opened after the game had been in progress seventeen minutes, Edwards running down the line and giving a fine lead to Sparrow, who put the home side ahead amid tremendous applause.

Encouraged by their success Barnet kept up the pressure, and a few minutes later, after Goodwin had saved from Handford, Rogers nipped in and scored. Play settled down a bit after this and Barnet had slightly the better of the exchanges up to the interval, when the score stood at 2-0.

Five minutes from the resumption Barnet were three goals up, Rogers finishing a clever solo effort by sending the ball into the net. Hampstead's first goal came ten minutes later, Wise converting an accurately placed corner by Harris, and soon after the visitors were awarded a penalty, as a result of which Sweetman scored. The excitement became intense at this stage, for plenty of time remained for a reversion of the scores. Hampstead tried hard for the equaliser, and several times came dangerously near to scoring, but the home defence withstood all onslaughts, and Barnet were still leading when the final whistle blew by three goals to two.

Barnet now have the pleasure of entertaining Guildford United.

This was Hampstead's first defeat this season. Of the previous eleven matches they had won eight and drawn three. The goal obtained by Sweetman from a penalty kick was their fiftieth, and sixteen have been registered against them.
