Match Report

From the Hendon & Finchley Times, 5 September 1924 (including teams) :

Hampstead Town made a capital start with their Athenian League programme in defeating Southall by 3 goals to 1. This well-deserved result was the more gratifying as the team fielded was of an experimental character and included five players new to senior football. The fears expressed by well-meaning critics before the game commenced proved groundless, and the wisdom of the club's policy of developing local talent through their reserve side and then giving it a chance to mature was fully confirmed.

The leavening of experienced men was of course valuable, and Cecil Wise quickly displayed his superlative merit, scoring the first goal of the season in grand style from an excellent pass from his new partner, Stanley Smith. The latter is likely to become a prime favourite, but Hampstead have yet to determine their regular left winger, as J.R. Weaver, temporarily disabled, has considerable claims to recognition.

The visitors made great efforts to equalise, and were certainly not fortune's favourites in this encounter. After the ball had been helped into the net in unorthodox fashion by R.F. Brazier, the goal was disallowed, Southall's aggressive claims being ignored by the referee, who, however, awarded a penalty. This was saved in brilliant style by C. Standish, and before the interval the home side went further ahead with a fine goal by K. Seabrooke.

Any claims to continued bad luck for the visitors were nullified by the manner in which their solitary goal was scored, an abortive corner kick being allowed a second chance from which the ball was scrambled into the net by A.E. Corben.

Constant pressure from the opposing forwards gave the home defence some trying periods in which Hampstead's goalkeeper was somewhat fortunate in disposing of shots, but the issue was made safe when, close on time, K. Seabrooke, who in this match played his best game for the club, scored from a fine individual effort.

Of the players on trial the half-back trio, S. Sweetman, H.G. Barnes and W.E. Harris, also R.F. Brazier at left-back, all gave satisfaction. The old brigade were well served by W.T. Field, who was brilliant at right-back, while Cecil Wise was easily the best of the forwards.

From the West Middlesex Gazette, 6 September 1924 (including teams) :

Southall gave a somewhat disappointing display in their opening game in the Athenian League on Saturday, when they were beaten by Hampstead Town on the Cricklewood-lane ground by 3-1. It was disappointing because it seemed apparent that there was no lack of ability in the team, but that what was wanting was a little bit more cohesion and driving power to force home advantages obtained by skilfully-conceived midfield attacks. If anything, Southall had slightly more of the game and opportunities but Hampstead Town's forward play was always more virile and dangerous. Luck certainly went against the visitors, and to have a goal disallowed under very unusual circumstances was discouraging; but apart from that, chances were wasted that might have cahnged the result. Southall should at least have drawn.

The ground was in good condition. Keen midfield play filled the first five minutes, at the end of which Standish performed the first clever effort of a brilliant display of goalkeeping, a neat header from Alford, of a lovely centre by Knight, being turned out. The home team opened the scoring nine minutes after the kick off, Wise, fastening promptly on to a pass by Smith, sending a splendid shot swerving out of Holding's reach. Chandler was prominent on the Southall right wing and twice called upon Standish to save difficult cross shots. A brief stoppage was called for injuries to Seabrooke and Standish, both having to leave the field for a short time. The game was very even, but the Southall attack was less forceful and Holding had the more work to do. Toward the close of the half the Hampstead goal had several remarkable escapes. Standish threw himself full length to divert a cross gound drive from Chandler and while still on the ground made a brilliant save from Corben. The goalkeeper had no chance to rise before Corben again secured and drove the ball into goal. one of the backs, who had dropped back into goal, tipped the ball as it was crossing, or had crossed the line, and the refeeree, to everybody's surprise, disallowed the goal and awarded the penalty. In spite of protests, the referee adhered to his decision, and Standish saved the place kick taken by Buttery. Immediately after the Hampstead custodian made another marvellous save at close range from Goodwin, following a corner. A minute from half-time Travers Day got clean away and from his centre Seabrooke scored with a fine shot. Half-time : Hampstead Town, 2 ; Southall, 0.

Southall did a great deal more of the attacking during the second half, but weak finishing and the fine work of Standish spoiled their efforts. Early on the Hampstead goal had further narrow escapes. Alford, standing almost on the goalline, missed a beautiful centre from Goodwin, and a little later Standish saved finely from Alford and scrambled the ball away in a sharp tussle in the goalmouth. Clever work by Corben left Alford with an open goal, but his shot gave Standish an opportunity he ought never to have had of making another excellent save. At the other end Smith sent across dangerous centres and Holdding saved a beautiful shot by Wise just under the bar, and put over a fine header from Seabrooke. Twenty minutes from the end Corben reduced the lead by heading through from a corner. Southall again attacked strrongly and Chandler struck the under part of the crossbar with a crashing drive that had Standish beaten, the ball rebounding into play, and Johnson narrowly missed the posts with a fast drive. Five minutes from time Seabrooke scored Hampstead's third goal with a brilliant individual effort. Result : Hampstead Town, 3 ; Southall, 1.
