Match Report

With the exception of F.G. Young, who has an injured knee, Hampstead Town put full strength in the field against Bromley on the Kentish club's ground on Monday evening. V.F. Rowe filled the vacancy at inside-right. Play commenced at ten minutes to seven, the start being delayed a few minutes owing to the late arrival of C. Wise, R. Wardlaw and S. Smith. Bromley, one-time champions, have not had a very successful season, but their show on Monday did not warrant their very lowly position in this season's table. As a matter of fact, Hampstead were somewhat fortunate in leaving the field with one point. In mid-field their play left little to be desired, but attacks on goal were few and painfully weak. Of the forwards Wise alone was up to form, with Irwin a good second. Smith, at outside-left, was constantly pulled up for offside, and neither K.G. Seabrooke or V.F. Rowe showed to advantage. Of the halves H.G. Barnes, at centre-half, was the pick, and R.F. Brazier shone conspicuously at left-back. He has made rapid strides this season, and some look upon him as one of the best men in that position in the Athenian League. E.F. Goodwin had far more work to do than the Bromley goalkeeper. True the home forwards were for the most part inept in marksmanship, but there were three or four shots which would have thoroughly tested even better men than Goodwin. One came from Thomas at outside-right and in the next minute Morris sent in a real beauty.

The game was not one of the pleasantest. Some of the players were apt to take offence at trifling occurances, and a ruffling of tempers developed, so that it was satisfactory to know that the game ended with teams at full strength. Both W.E. Harris (Hampstead) and E.E. Mockford (Bromley) were temporarily crocked, but not through the fault of opponents. Exciting incidents were few, the chief being fairly early in the game, when Bromley were awarded a penalty kick, F.C. Iles and Harris taking the liberty of sandwiching Colwell. Mockridge failed badly with the spot kick, the ball going wide of the post. At the other end Hampstead missed one or two chances. Just on the interval Seabrooke made one of his characteristic single runs, but was robbed when close to goal. A corner was awarded, but this, like more than a dozen others through the game, brought nothing tangible.

In the second half of the game - there was no adjournment for refreshment - Hampstead started with a determination to gain their first victory away from home this season, but the pressure was not long maintained. Though Irwin and Smith managed to get in a few good centres, opportunities went abegging. Towards the end Bromley subjected Hampstead's defence to a great deal of pressure, but a clean sheet was preserved.
