Match Report

Hampstead Town gave a splendid display in their replay against Wood Green in the London Senior Cup on Saturday, beating the visitors to Cricklewood-lane by 6-2. The win was well deserved and the score by no mean's flattered the Town's performance. They worked well in the first half and were all over Wood Green after the change of ends. The visitors have a clever goalkeeper in L. Brooks and he saved a far heavier defeat. The game was watched by an enormous crowd.

Hampstead started with considerable dash and were soon testing the Wood Green goal, Wise, Reinke and Pease putting in dangerous shots. They forced two corners and from the second Nash opened the Hampstead score before the game was very old. Wood Green responded with a vigorous attack and Goodwin made some smart saves. The visitors were fast on the right wing and it was evident that the chief danger was from this quarter. Webster and Cronin worked well together, and Webster was rewarded with the equalising goal. It was not long before Hampstead were round the Wood Green goal again with the custodian in action, but they were forced back and Goodwin was called out to clear. He was too harassed to deal with the ball properly, and H. Macdonald took possession and scored from his throw-out. Wood Green retained this lead until the interval, which arrived during a lively attack by the homesters.

Hampstead set the pace in the second half and were soon giving Brooks a hot time in goal. Two corners were forced in quick succession and Wise levelled the score after several good attempts to find the net. Though Wood Green broke away at intervals, the homesters were really having things all their own way now and fine combination among the forwards enabled Wise to score another from a well-timed centre from Thorlby. Shortly afterwards Ball shot across from the left wing, giving a grand opportunity to Reinke, who placed the ball well in at close range. Hampstead's fifth came from Pease, who netted shortly after an unfruitful penalty given against the Wood Green goalkeeper for holding. Hampstead stuck to the attack and a veritable bombardment ended with Wise bringing the score up to 6-2.

Though Wood Green led in the first half a victory for Hampstead was popularly expected. The home team played with pleasing combination and the forwards were not afraid of open play, while the half-backs supported them admirably. The Wood Green forward line were fast and their right wingers showed some clever tactics. The defence worked gallantly against such continuous pressure and Brooks put up a fine performance in goal. Hampstead will now meet Finchley in the final qualifying round.
