Match Report

By the only goal of the game, obtained about ten minutes from time from a corner kick, Kingstonian won at Cricklewood-lane on Saturday, this, we believe, being the first time they have secure full Athenian points on the Hampstead Town ground. The result was disappointing if not altogether surprising, as Kingstonian have had a very good season and brought a very strong team, including F. Macey, who had played for Plymouth Argyle the previous week. He did excellent work for his side notwithstanding the fact that he was closely marked, Pease being a keen watch-dog. "Watch him!" was a cry constantly made by spectators when it seemed likely that Macey would score. Many of the shots of this clever forward went astray, but he was bubbling over with energy, and kept those opposed to him on the alert all the time. At the beginning of the game it seemed as if Hampstead Town would be overwhelmed, but gradually they got into their stride and in the second half, when they were not hampered by the sun, had quite as much of the game as their guests. Good work in mid-field, however, was nullified by weakness in front of goal. It is true that Harman, in the Kingstonian goal, kept out some wonderfully good shots, but he had not that amount of work which fell to Goodwin, who was in no sense to blame when he was at last beaten by Stimpson, who headed through from a corner. Some aver that the ball swerved over the line in its flight from the corner to the goal, but there was no hesitation on the part of the referee. There was another occasion when it looked odds on Hampstead being awarded a penalty kick for hands. A linesman waved his flag vigorously for several seconds, but play continued.

Luck was certainly not on the side of Hampstead, who, taking the game throughout, were fully value for one point. Their defence left little to be desired. In the first twenty minutes Goodwin had a very hot time, and saved many shots which would have beaten less capable men. The backs did well, Clarke coming in for rounds of applause, and his younger colleague, Margetts, showing that unless a super man comes along, he deserves his place. The halves had a gruelling time in looking after the speedy Kingstonian forwards, who abandoned pattern weaving for long passing, but they were consistent, Wardlaw being a shining light. His only conspicuous fault was in failing to win the toss, as his side were handicapped in having to face a glaring sun. Wise and Ashby were the best forwards, although they did not make the most of their opportunities. It was a long time before Reinke could make any impression, and while the extreme wingers put in a number of good centres, Bucci lacked that extra ounce of dash which was essential. Cousins was shaken up early in the game, and this was inclined to make him timorous.

Kingstonian were well served by the defence, and at centre-half Craddock was a tower of strength. The forwards combined well and were very fast. As a team they were built on much sturdier lines than Hampstead and made good use of their strength. There were a few transgressions of the rules, but the sporting spirit that exists between Athenian League clubs was not absent, and the game was one of the best seen on the ground this seasson. Had the scores been reversed the spectators would have gone away very happy, as good football had been witnessed under the pleasentest conditions. Wise had exceedingly hard luck with some of his shots in the first half. He has played so often against the Kingstonians that they are well aware of his prowess, and, like Macey, he was closely watched. Once he was fouled, and from the free kick the ball hovered near the goal-line but was not given the extra thrust which the home supporters anxiously awaited.
