Match Report

Hampstead sustained their heaviest defeat for a long time past on Saturday at Bromley, the home side taking two Athenian League points by virtue of a win by no fewer than six goals to love. A reverse for Hampstead was not unexpected, having regard to the difficulty experienced in constructing an effective forward line and to losses in other departments, but the severity of the defeat was a great blow.

Bromley had got together a very strong side; Bush is a newcomer from Barking, and Parker hails from Foots Cray. As the centre-forward did the hat trick, his debut must be pronounced successful. T.A. Mason, the old Clapton and Calies [London Caledonians] goalkeeper, was programmed to appear, but he had a fine deputy in Ellis. From Hampstead's advertised team Dellow stood down in favour of Rowe.

Such a substantial win for Bromley was not presaged by the play in the opening half, during which Hampstead quite held their own. Forty minutes had elapsed before Allen, who had kept a fine goal, was beaten by Parker, who snapped up the ball after the goalkeeper had failed to clear properly. Before this incident Hampstead had had many opportunities of scoring, but let them slip by. At times the forward work was pretty to watch, but while Ellis had some anxious moments much of Hampstead's work lacked sting at the crucial moment. Evans tried hard, but found in S.M. Osborne a centre-half much above the average. Hampstead are proud of Pease, but on Saturday's form Bromley have a pivot his equal. Wise was the best of the Hampstead forwards, the others being disappointing, and thus more work than was welcome fell to the defence. Thanks largely to Clarke, who found good support in Turner, a youngster full of promise, the Bromley men were held at bay until just before the change of ends when, as stated, Parker gave the home supporters the opportunity to cheer. Bromley might have done better if Thomas had had more work to do, too large a share of the play being on their left wing. Wise, as usual, worked very hard for Hampstead, and appeared to be the only forward to threaten danger. Evans was too well-marked to be troublesome, and though he found the net once, he was palpably offside.

In the second half Hampstead were overwhelmed, Bromley scoring no fewer than five goals without reply. One of these was protested against with a vehemence, quite contrary to the practice of the team, by Allen, who averred that the ball had crossed the touch-line before it was centred. Six minutes after the restart Parker, from a corner - one of many taken by Bromley in this half - scored his second goal, and four minutes later he completed his hat trick, both of these goals, it should be mentioned, following centres by Thomas, who was in sparkling form. A little later Thomas was fouled in the penalty area and H. Osborne scored with a shot which was altogether beyond the power of Allen to stop. King afterwards scored two goals from passes by Young and Bush, and although now and again Hampstead got within shooting range, their efforts were of no avail.

Bromley gave a fine display, and, even allowing for the palpable weaknesses of their opponents, should on this form be in the running for the Athenian League championship. They were a much heavier side than Hampstead, but, nevertheless, quicker on the ball. The most prominent were the two Osbornes, Thomas, Baird, and King. Of Hampstead one cannot speak very highly. Clarke, Wardlaw, and Wise we regarded as the best of a team which needs strengthening in several departments if the downward course is to be stayed.
