Match Report

Hampstead secured both points in their Athenian League game with Bromley on Saturday at Claremont-road. The win was thoroughly deserved, and the score of 2-1 by no means represents the character of the game, which was largely in Hampstead's favour, particularly in the first half. It was in this period that Bromley scored their goal through a big slice of luck. Anderson, Hampstead's right-half, in clearing, kicked the ball into the face of Parsons at left-back, and it went into the net. This was the only goal scored before the interval, and rarely have we attended a match in which a side did so much pressing as Hampstead had done without meeting with success. The chairman of the Bromley club rightly said that it was a weird game, and that his side were extremely lucky to be leading at half-time.

In the second half play was of a more even character, but Hampstead came into their own with a couple of beautiful goals. Not many minutes had passed before Howell, who had been given little work in the first half, made a fine pass to Shearcroft, who ran through and got the equalising goal. Scarcely had the applause died down before Howell was again in the picture, and from his pass Smith headed the winning goal. Bromley made great efforts to equalise, their form being much better than it was in the first half, but although they once found the net the whistle had previously gone for offside.

Hampstead's team was strengthened by the return of Clarke at full right back and R. Wardlaw at left half, but it was disappointing to find that while Smy had been advertised to appear at inside-left his services were not available. Harvey was therefore introduced and he played a very useful game, particularly in the second half, although he should rid himself of the tendency to handle the ball. Bromley were short of one or two of their best players, notably Mills at centre-forward. G. Balloch, an old Erith and Belvedere player, had promised to keep goal, but in his absence the position was filled by G. Bennett. If Bromley have a better goalkeeper than Bennett they are fortunate; but for his fine display the Kentish men would have lost several goals.

The Bromley goal had a charmed existence. In the first five minutes Hampstead had forced three or four corners, and the number granted to them during the first forty-five must have beaten their record. With but few exceptions they were admirably placed, but the Bromley defence was very sound. At one time Deeks failed miserably with his place kicks, but now he shows great judgement, while Howell does equally well in the same line. While Bennett was kept busy, Trevers had a fairly easy time. He shaped confidently at most shots that came his way, and when he kicks more strongly he will add to his value. Parsons was the better of the backs although Clarke did not do badly; and of the home halves Anderson was again the pick, with Pease a good second, although we have often seen him feed his forwards more judiciously. It was good to see Wardlaw in the team again. There was a tendency in the first half to give an undue proportion of the work to the right wing, and though Deeks and Smith played with perfect harmony it was not helpful that Howell should be starved. However, play was better distributed later, and Howell had a hand in both goals. The forward line as a whole played well, and with ordinary luck would have got half-a-dozen goals. In these days Hampstead have to be content with small mercies. The two points proved very acceptable, and while it will be difficult to get away from the bottom but one position in the table, we do not think there will be any danger of the club losing its place in the League.
