Match Report

From the Hendon & Finchley Times, 13 January 1928 (no teams):

Hampstead visited Southall on Saturday in the Athenian League and were defeated by four goals to two, after a very exciting game. Hampstead were without H.W. Shearcroft, who was reserve for the Athenian League against the Corinthians, and also J. Smy, who was playing for Middlesex County against the Royal Air Force.

W. Sankey was given a trial at centre-half,and he gave a very polished display. His home is in South Wales, but he is expected to move to London shortly, in which case Hampstead will have his services, and he will be a great capture. E.T. Cannon, who deputised for Smy at inside-left, was weak.

Southall opened the score after twenty minutes through Adey, who scored with a fine individual effort. Hampstead, however, played up strongly and Reinke equalised before the interval, following a fine run right through the centre.

Soon after the restart Reinke put Hampstead ahead, and this lead was held until fifteen minutes from the end, when, following a free kick awarded Southall against Cannon, Adey equalised. Hampstead tried hard to save a point and Smith, in goal, brought off some wonderful saves. Shorland was injured and had to go off, but soon returned. Bloxham was then badly injured and had to be carried off and taken to hospital, but happily no bones were broken. With ten men Hampstead could not keep Southall out, and they scored two more goals through Adey and Wenham.

For Hampstead, Smith gave a great display in goal, while Shorland, Young, Sankey, Levy and Reinke all did well. Wenham and Rogers were outstanding for Southall.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Hampstead visit Sutton United, whilst the Reserves entertain Sutton Reserves at Claremont-road (kick-off 2.30).

From the West Middlesex Gazette, 14 January 1928 (includes teams) :

A remarkable feature about the game between Southall and Hampstead at Western-road, Southall, on Saturday, was that seventeen minutes from the end the visitors, after being outplayed for three-quarters of the game, were leading 2-1. Southall had tried unsuccessfully to break down the brilliant defence of the Hampstead goalkeeper, and it began to appear doubtful whether the home team would score again, but, in a rousing finish, Southall netted three times to win by 4-2.

Both teams had changes. Southall were without the services of F. Webb and F.R. Johnson, who were assisting the League team against the Corinthians, H. Young, who was down with injury, and F.J.C. Blake, who arrived too late owing to train delays. Consequently E. Buttery and F. Goodwin appeared at back, A. Heywood ar right half, and F.A. Yates dropped back to left half to give place to A. Cleghorn at outside left. Hampstead, on account of League and County calls, were without J. Smy and H. Shearcroft, their regular inside left and centre-half.

Though weakened in defence by the changes, Southall generally held the Hampstead forwards in subjection. The open type of game adopted by the visitors, however, made their attacks often dangerous, Levy, in particular, being a fast and clever winger, and Reinke a persistent leader. The Hampstead defence was finely served by the wing halves, Wardlaw and Young, and a superb display of goalkeeping by Smith undoubtedly saved the visitors from a heavy defeat. Goodwin gave a capital display, and was the better of the two Southall backs, Buttery making several bad mistakes, and Wenham was outstanding at centre-half. The home forwards combined cleverly, and Adey was in great form as leader, accomplishing the "hat trick." Clark and Goodman were a splendid wing, but Rogers was not so effective as usual, and Cleghorn often shot when he could have centred to better advantage.

After fifteen minutes of end-to-end play, Adey, accepting a forward pass by Goodman, ran through to shoot past Smith and give Southall the lead. From then until the interval Southall attacked strongly, but failed to again beat Smith, who made many fine saves. On one occasion Adey struck the goalkeeper in the face with a hard shot, Smith having to receive attention from the trainer, and Goodman hit the upright. Four minutes before the interval a mistake by Buttery let Reinke through to equalise for Hampstead, and immediately on resuming the same player gave his side the lead as the result of a scrimmage in the Southall goal. Hampstead seldom afterwards crossed the half-way line, and their defence was almost run off their feet by the spirited attacks of the Southall forwards, now well supported by the halves. Smith, however, made some further notable saves, and it was not until seventeen minutes from the end that he was again beaten by a header from Adey, to whom the ball was neatly headed by Clark from a free kick by Buttery. Two minutes later Wenham gave Southall the lead with a great shot from 25 yards' out, and four minutes from the end Adey completed the scoring.
