Match Report

In the second attempt at this tie Hendon were almost unchanged with only Warren Kelly replacing the absent Kieran Gallagher on the subs' bench. Wealdstone, meanwhile, made a number of changes, bringing in a number of teenagers.

The second game was nowhere near as good as the abandoned one. Wealdstone continued trying to play to the pace of Marvin Morgan, who could do little from his place on the bench and his replacement, Jermaine Beckford, lacked Morgan's speed. Hendon were simply not as effective, with the exception of Dale Binns.

He was electric, giving James Fisher a roasting. Binns opened the scoring in the 19th minute, but not coming off his regular left wing berth. Instead, he had been involved in a right-side corner and was on his way back across the pitch, when the cleared corner was returned forward by Micky Woolner.

Spotting an opening, BINNS let fly from 25 yards and Andy Carter did well to even touch the ball as it flew off the underside of the crossbar. Assistant referee Graeme Thorley was 15 yards from goal when the ball came down, but he ran to within a couple of yards from the line before signalling a goal.

Rob Haworth should have extended the lead when he was clean through on goal, but he dragged his shot across the target and just wide of the far post. It delayed Hendon's second goal until the 39th minute. Again Binns was the instigator, this time with burst of pace and a low cross.

The rest was done by Eugene Ofori. Followed closely on his run into the box by Martin Carter, OFORI stopped and bent his run round to the edge of the penalty area. From here he met Binns' cross on the volley and smashed the ball past Carter.

Binns was withdrawn at half-time having suffered a slight ankle injury. He was replaced by Ricci Crace in a straight swap, although the substitute never looked comfortable on the left wing. It shouldn't have mattered as Haworth, Paul Towler and Ofori all spurned good chances to extend Hendon's lead.

In the 65th minute, Steve Butler was lucky to receive only a yellow card when he appeared to be the last defender and fouled the breaking Beckford. The free-kick came to nothing, but Hendon still seemed in control.

That all changed in the last 20 minutes. Butler limped off in the 70th minute with an ankle injury and was replaced by Jon-Barrie Bates in midfield with Towler dropping back to centre-half. Suddenly Wealdstone sensed they could get back into the game and they succeeded.

In the 80th minute, Hendon failed to clear the ball and substitute Andy MYHILL drove a powerful shot past David Hook. Almost immediately, Andy Carter was the recipient of lenient treatment as his offence of handling the ball outside the penalty area resulted in a yellow card and not a red, even though he clearly thwarted Haworth. Steve Forbes hit the crossbar with his free-kick.

Haworth then hit the bar with a free header from a cross, and it proved a costly miss as another Wealdstone sub, Ben ALEXANDER, snatched an 84th minute equaliser.

Wealdstone now had all the impetus and must have been strong favourites to advance, but instead, Hendon grabbed a winner, even before the onset of extra time. There were barely 2 minutes of normal time remaining when HAWORTH beat the Wealdstone offside trap and this time made no mistake with a powerful drive into the corner.

"We played better on Tuesday then we did tonight," admitted manager Dave Anderson after the game. "I couldn't give the team more than six and a half out of ten tonight."
