Match Report

From the Hendon & Finchley Times, 28/12/1928, p.9 :

For the return match on Boxing Day, Hampstead had to play a reserve half-back line, a late message from Webb stating that he had an injured ankle, causing Young to drop back. Bucci was also a doubtful starter owing to knee trouble, and for some time Hampstead played one short. Under the circumstances the result - a win by three goals to one - was very satisfactory, and while all did well, chief credit must be given to Smy, Young, Owens and Smith.

The only goal in the first half was from a fine shot by Smy. After the interval Moore was brought down unfairly in the penalty area, and Smy converted the place kick. Miller added to Hampstead's lead from a centre by Moore, but ten minutes from the end Champion scored for Wealdstone.

From the Uxbridge & West Drayton Gazette, 28/12/1928, p.14 :

In the return game at Hampstead on Boxing-Day, Wealdstone capitulated by two goals after having more of the play. Both teams again made several changes, Wealdstone having R. Dunn, E. Stocks, A. Downing and Foster for Grafton, Davies, Smith and R. Groves. Hampstead had the services of Shearcroft, their regular centre-forward, for this game, but had some changes in their defence. Wealdstone were considerably the better combined side in the first half, but a snap shot by Smy, after about ten minutes, gave Hampstead the lead. Hampstead were hard put to prevent an equaliser, their goalkeeper having considerably more to do in this half than Dunn.

On the resumption Wealdstone continued to dominate the play and should have equalised, but many good efforts failed through the ball striking opponents. Foster, who though clever with his passes, was too disinclined to shoot, had one good header hit the upright with Smith out of position. A penalty awarded against Turner midway through this half veered the game definitely in Hampstead's favour. Smy converted the spot kick, and almost in the same minute Miller registered Hampstead's third with a surprise shot. Shortly afterwards Champion reduced the deficit following good work on the right wing, but though Wealdstone finished strongly, the luck of the game was all Hampstead's, and they retained their two goals' lead.
