Match Report

Hampstead were victorious on Saturday in an Athenian League match against Barnet, at Barnet, when the visitors secured four goals and Barnet three. At one period of the match Hampstead were leading 4-1, but some excellent play by Barnet towards the end of the game materially reduced the lead. In spite of the heavy ground the game was very fast and both teams were perceivably tired when they left the ground. Though the ball appeared to be very light the passes were mostly accurate, and both goal-keepers were tried well and often. As indicated by the score, the defences were inferior to the forwards, and the two sides were remarkably well matched, at least two of Hampstead's goals being lucky, if not doubtful. The attacks on Hampstead's goal invariably came from the left and the defenders on that wing seemed to be unable to check the frequent attacks. Those on the right wing were much more successful, the contributing features being Webb and Young, both of whom were very tricky, and the fact that Barnet's forwards on the left wing were not so enterprising as those on the right. Finch and Wilcox made a very poor wing compared with Sutton and Morris. Of Hampstead's forwards little can be said, except that they worked in complete union and harmony, Moore, on the left wing, being outstanding. Smith, in goal, played a wonderful game, and the majority of his saves were very difficult shots. There was only one goal which he should have saved, the last of the match, from Morris. There was a "gate" of about 2,000.

Hampstead's forwards were predominant at the commencement of the game, but Barnet soon came through with surprising speed on the right wing and were let through by Owens, fine shots being attempted by both Sutton and Snaith before Webb was able to clear. Sutton was very unfortunate a few minutes later, for, after beating Owens and being in a lovely position, he slipped before he could shoot. The attack was continued by Morris, but Smith saved well. At the other end Smy had a try, but he could not steady himself, and the ball went wide. The game was very even and the ball travelled from one end to the other with surprising frequency. Wilcox had an open goal and could have given Smith an admirable test, but he missed the net badly. After twenty minutes' play Shearcroft netted. The ball came from the left wing and Shearcroft was standing almost in the goal and had no difficulty in putting it past Thornett. It appeared to be very doubtful whether he was onside or not, but the goal was allowed.

The Hampstead goal underwent a severe pressure for some time and eventually Finch equalised with only Smith to beat. Barnet almost snatched the lead immediately afterwards, for after Smith had successfully held a ball, he was charged, with the result that he dropped it, but it did not enter the net as he was several yards out of his goal, and he managed to punch clear. A corner was soon awarded to Hampstead on the left wing, and it was well taken by Moore. The ball dropped between Thornett and Shearcroft, and then rolled into the net giving Hampstead the lead with the second lucky goal of the match. The half closed with Hampstead pressing.

The second half was not very old when Sherman took a corner and enabled Shearcroft to head into the net. After this Barnet were pressing consistently until Smy ran back and took the ball through on his own. He gave it to Shearcroft, but he could not net. Moore had a try, but it was saved, and Lockwood kicked over the bar from a corner. Smy scored the next with a long shot, putting the ball past Thornett in fine style. Smith had a narrow escape soon after this, for Sutton put across a lovely centre which the inside men failed to take. Following a corner, which was conceded by Smith in a successful attempt to save from Sparrow, Barnet's centre-forward put the ball into Hampstead's net. This was about ten minutes from time, and Barnet attacked until the final whistle was blown. Only two minutes before the end Morris scored with a ball that presented no oustanding difficulty and which should have been saved.
