Hampstead, on Saturday, entertained a strong 'Spurs eleven, which included such well-known players as Wilding and Lowdell in the half-back line, and Smy, Hampstead's late captain, at inside-left.
Hampstead made one change from the side which defeated Staines the previous week, Potter taking the place of Butland, who was rested, as he had not really recovered from an injury received a few weeks back.
Smith beat Wilding for choice of ends and decided to attack towards the pavilion. Hampstead were soon one up, for after five minutes' play, following a fine run on the right by Gardner, who put across a good centre, Limbrey opened the score. The 'Spurs then took up the attack, Griffiths and Smy being very prominent on the left. Smy put Griffiths away, and from his centre Radford headed past Smith to equalise.
At this period both teams were playing really good football, Hampstead being very prominent in attack. Gardner was always dangerous on the right, and time and again he outpaced Reddish, the Tottenham back, by speed and cleverness, and from another of his centres Evans put Hampstead ahead again. This was soon followed by another goal, again scored by Evans, which gave them a two-goal lead.
Hampstead were now well on top, but Moore spoilt several good attacking movements by shooting instead of centreing the ball. At the other end Smy missed an open goal, sending the ball well over the bar, but five minutes from the interval, following a good pass by Radford, Smy reduced Hampstead's lead.
After the interval the 'Spurs put on heavy pressure and the Hampstead team was beginning to feel the effects of their great first half. Wilding was now a dominating figure in the 'Spurs team. Hampstead were doing their utmost to hokd on to their lead, but eventually Smy beat Smith with a cross-shot to equalise the score.
The 'Spurs were now all out for the lead but the Hampstead defence played a great game and held out to the end. Hampstead had one great chance to again take the lead near the end of the game, when Potter broke away, but after plodding his way through the mud and was nearing his object, Reddish, the 'Spurs left-back, caught him and cleared the ball.
For a friendly match it was keenly contested from start to finish. Gardner and Wilton both again justified their inclusion at outside-right and left-back respectively.
