Match Report

Before a moderate crowd Southall and Hampstead drew at one goal all in an Athenian League match at Southall on Saturday. Both teams made one change, Hampstead introducing Shone at centre-forward to the exclusion of Potter, and Southall playing H. Mortimer instead of F.D. Ahl.

The score represents the play, although with the chances that came Hampstead's way in the first thirty minutes they should have won by two or three goals.

Southall won the toss and set Hampstead to play against the sun in the first half. From the kick-off Bucci sent across a fine pass to Moore, who, centreing accurately, saw Streets clear. Hampstead were awarded the first corner, which Moore placed over the line. Southall retaliated, but their forwards did not combine well and many chances were missed. From another pass by Bucci, Moore put across a fine shot, only to see the ball miss by inches. No doubt centreing against the sun was difficult, but one fine ground shot hit the corner of the post inside the goal and came out into play at the foot of Shone, who skied it over the bar. Shone, given possession of the ball a few yards in front of goal, had a good opening, but Streets made another timely clearance for a corner. From a free kick for a foul on Hall, Gale put in a smart shot for Southall, but it was cleared finely by Wilton in front of goal. Continuing the pressure, Smith had several difficult shots from Collett and Yates to deal with. Taking possession of the ball in mid-field, Sherman next came into the limelight with a smart run down the right. After beating two Southall defenders he put across a centre which Shone headed just outside the upright. Later, in a melee, Sherman obtained the ball and put in a shot which everybody thought would find the net, but it was cleared by Holding. Half-time arrived with the score sheet blank.

Upon resuming Southall made great efforts to take the lead, and only brilliant work by Smith and Webb prevented them from doing so. After play had been in progress eleven minutes Sherman, receiving the ball on the wing, put across a nice centre which brought Holding out of his goal, and Bucci, accepting the ball, scored for Hampstead with a tame shot. A few minutes later Shone had a great chance to increase the lead. He received the ball in mid-field and with nobody near him had a clear run for goal, but as Holding ran out Shone, with a feeble kick, shot straight at the goal-keeper, who cleared easily. From now onwards Hampstead were on the defensive, Sherman dropping back into the half-back line as Young was limping owing to the recurrance of an injury received the previous week.

The game now developed into a kick-and-rush type, and Clark had hard luck with a beautiful drive which went just wide of the post. Keeping up the pressure on the Hampstead goal, Southall were eventually rewarded. Receiving a nice pass from Adams, Collett put in a beautiful shot which passed through a crowd of players into the net, well out of Smith's reach.

By now both teams were tiring and but for some fine work by Webb and Shorland Southall would have taken the lead. For the last ten minutes both sides were kicking out of play all the time, much to the annoyance of the crowd. Time arrived with score one all, but on the whole it would be said that Hampstead were lucky to come away with a point, for during the whole of the second half they were on the defensive.

It might be mentioned that besides Young being injured, Seddon also received a nasty knock just before half-time, which greatly affected his work. The play of the Hampstead team on the whole was not so good as the previous week. There was an absence of dash among the forwards, while Shone, in the centre, was not at all brilliant. Moore played a fine game in the first half, but later did not get the passes to show his ability, while Sherman, having to act in the defensive, was rarely seen to advantage. Both the backs played a safe game, and Smith on several occasions saved what appeared to be certain goals in fine style.

The best player on the Southall side was Gale, at centre-half. He broke up many of the combined movements by the Hampstead forwards, while Yates and Adams, on the respective wings, put across some nice centres. Streets was the better of the Southall backs.
