Match Report

Hampstead met Southall on Monday at Claremont Road in the semi-final of the Middlesex Charity Cup, the game ending in favour of Hampstead by three goals to one. Thus they qualified to meet Wealdstone in the final on May 9, the venue being the ground of the Finchley club. Twelve months ago Wealdstone beat Hampstead in the final of the same cup at Brentford by three goals to one.

Last Monday's match was a replayed tie, no goals having been scored when the clubs met at Southall on March 21. The weather seriously affected the gate, but those present saw a surprisingly good game, which was fast throughout. Players made light of difficulties presented by the soddened condition of the ground. Mistakes in kicking were inevitable, and there were many amusing incidents. Butland was smothered from head to foot in mud, and would hardly have been recognised by his own wife.

Hampstead were in the fortunate position of being able to play the team that drew with Barking with the exception of Bramley, whose place at outside left was filled by J. Hooper. Southall, however, were less happily situated, several reserves being played.

The game opened sensationally, Bucci scoring within the first two minutes with a low shot that passed just inside the post. At the end of twenty-five minutes Taylor, at centre-forward, equalised for Southall, but before half-time Evans regained the lead for Hampstead.

The score of 2-1 at the interval by no means represented the run of the play. Smith, the Hampstead goalkeeper, was idle for quite long periods. Bucci and Evans put in many good shots, but the best one of all came from Compton from long range, and nothing would have given the onlookers greater pleasure thanto have seen this promising young back find the net.

Soon after the restart Walsh, who had been showing improved form, ran through to get Hampstead's third goal with a good shot. There was no more scoring. Although Southall played pluckily, they were clearly the inferior side, and they have to thank Lewis for doing so well in goal, while Ward was a bulwark at right back.
