Match Report

Hampstead lost their Athenian League game at Redhill on Saturday by four goals to two after taking the lead at the end of eight minutes and having a big share of the play. Having made the score two all early in the second half, Hampstead took the upper hand, but failed to make use of their chances. On the other hand, Redhill attacked strongly, G.A. Bond (centre-forward) and G. Cornish (outside-left), late of Grays Athletic, being very effective, and pulled off a victory which was somewhat unexpected, having regard to the fact that Hampstead had not tasted defeat since Christmas Day and Redhill were last but one in the League table.

On the Hampstead side there were three outstanding players, Bucci and Butland in the half-back line, and Dean at right-back. The work of the others was patchy. Evanns was shadowed so closely that his chances of shooting were few and far between, and it is significant that when he fails to score the side should lose. The absence of Morton at outside-right through influenza was felt. His place was taken by Berry, who is essentially a left wing player. Walsh put in one or two terrific shots, but was not lucky, and while Moore scored one fine goal, he was not at his best, particularly in the first half. The forwards found it extremely difficult to get within close range, and pot shots were for the most part comfortably dealt with by Peart.

Compton was often at fault by allowing his wing men too much latitude, but if he acts on the advice which is tendered to him by those who have been through the mill and is not too sensitive, he should develop into a serviceable player.

The action of Smith, the Hampstead captain, in giving Redhill the advantage of playing with the sun on their backs was questionable. His side, though having the benefit of a slight wind, were certainly handicapped. Nevertheless they started promisingly, Bucci early finding his best form, and at the end of eight minutes Young opened the scoring with a header from a centre by Butland, the ball passing just inside the post.

After this Redhill had a fair share of the play, Bond doing well in the centre, but while many raids were made the finishing was weak. Cornish was cetainly the most dangerous man, and he often beat Young by his artistry. It was from his foot that the equalising goal came.

Of the goalkeepers, Smith was not so busy as Peart, but Redhill went ahead eight minutes from the interval, Bond finding the net after several thrusts had been made. Hampstead wasted chances, the most glaring instance being on the part of Berry after an opening made by Evans. True, they got the ball over the goal-line twice, but in one case Evans was offside and on another occasion he was penalised for pushing in the goalmouth.

A noticeable improvement was seen in Hampstead's play after changing ends, and seven minutes from the restart there was a grand equalising goal from Moore after exchanges between Evans and Berry. Another shot from Moore directly afterwards almost took effect, anf for a time Hampstead's chief efforts came from the left wing, Butland doing most effective work.

For Redhill, Austin proved very troublesome, anf if his shooting had been up to the standard of his midfield play things would have been awkward for Hampstead. In shooting the right wing men were far more dangerous.

After being on the defensive for the greater part of the time, Redhill established a strong attack, and fifteen minutes from the end Bigg gave Redhill the lead for the second time, a further goal from Bond soon afterwards definitely deciding the issue. Hampstead never looked like recovering lost ground.

While congratulating Redhill on getting points so badly needed, the decision should be reversed tomorrow, when the return game will be played at Claremont Road.
