Hampstead opened the season with a friendly match on the Hastings ground, the score being 3-3. Hampstead's defence was the same as last year, but there were new players in B. Peck at outside-right, A.R. Eagles at inside-right, and T.D. Welsh at centre-forward.
Hastings were much quicker in getting settled than were Hampstead, and for the first twenty minutes of the game Hastings were the better side. Smith was repeatedly called upon to save his goal. The Hampstead backs were slow in starting off, as were the wing halves, and after twenty minutes' play F. Parker opened the score for Hastings. The home team were then very unfortunate in losing their goalkeeper, who fell heavily, dislocating his elbow, which necessitated his removal to hospital. They were, however, able to secure the services of the Reserves custodian, who was playing nearby. Hampstead then got into their sride and following a corner kick taken by Peck, Bramley equalised, the score at half-time being 1-1.
After change of ends Hastings again played up well, and went further ahead with two goals scored by F. Parker and E. Adfield. Welsh then changed places with Eagles, and the forward line gained in speed. Welsh played up well, and put in a good shot, which was partially cleared by the Hastings goalkeeper. Potter, however, scored from the rebound to reduce the lead and shortly afterwards Welsh scored the equalising goal for Hampstead.
S.R. Smith, in goal, played an excellent game for Hampstead, as did G. Bucci at centre-half, and T.D. Welsh.
