Match Report

After their big wins over Northampton Nomads and Uxbridge Town, and not the less meritorious fight against a strong Arsenal team, it was expected that Hampstead, at home on Saturday, would have won their first League game. But they gave a disappointing show against Redhill, who divided the points. Some of the Hampstead players seemed affected by the hard game against the Arsenal two days earlier, although the team did their best work when, nearly half-way through the second half, Redhill took the lead through Lockey with a swift and low shot. Six minutes later Hampstead drew level, Evans heading the ball through following an ideal pass from Bucci to Butler and a fine centre by the latter.

Both teams made strenuous efforts to secure the lead, but while Hampstead had the greater number of shots at goal, Jenkins, the Redhill centre-forward, missed a glorious opening.

Hampstead were compelled to make two changes from the side that beat Uxbridge, injuries keeping Richardson and Rees out of the side. R. Dean partnered his brother at back with a considerable measure of success, but the half-back line suffered through the absence of Rees. Happily, however, Bucci was on top form, while on the other wing Bloxham did well. Unfortunately an injury handicapped him in the second half.

The fact that Hampstead did not score more than once was largely due to the brilliant goalkeeping of Sherman, who kept out shots from all angles almost uncannily. Smith, Hampstead's goalkeeper, also played splendidly, but he had far less to do than Sherman. The Hampstead line did not work happily together. Rowe and Spalton seemed slow. Many chances were missed, and there was again a tendancy on the part of Evans to hang on to the ball. Breagan and Butler served the side well on the extreme wings.

The game was remarkable for the large number of corner kicks. The majority fell to Hampstead, but Redhill put up a remarkably good defence. Sherman, to whom the visitors were largely indebted for their point, was loudly cheered on leaving the field. He well deserved the compliment.
