Match Report

In the last minute of the Athenian League game at Uxbridge on Saturday, Knott had a wonderfully easy chance of scoring for Golders Green, but the ball struck the upright. As a consequence points were shared. It was not a bad performance to draw on the Depot ground, upon which Golders Green have seldom shown to advantage, but the loss of one point was important in view of their anxiety to win the Championship. In justice to Knott it may be added that he scored twice.

Golders Green placed full strength in the field but as it happened the re-introduction of Evans, who had stood down the previous week owing to injury, was a mistake, Quite early in the game he developed lameness, and had to vacate the centre-forward position for that of outside-left. While one would not say he was useless, there can be no question that his unfitness cost Golders Green the game.

It was somewhat remarkable that all four goals were scored fairly early in the game. Within ten minutes Golders Green were two down. Playing down the slope, Uxbridge started with tremendous dash, a nice centre by Jones (who is generally a thorn in the flesh to Golders Green) being an early feature. The visiting defenders at the start did not kick with their usual brilliancy, and it was not long before a well-judged centre by Ballard, at outside-left, gave Hollister a chance to score, which he promptly accepted.

This early success acted as a tonic to Uxbridge, who for a time quite over-played Golders Green, and after Braisher had made some good attempts without success a second goal came through Ballard. It was a brilliant shot from long range, though Rowe was unfortunate in giving the last touch. There is little doubt that the ball would have gone past Smith without Rowe's help.

Two goals down caused the fairly large number of visiting supporters to recall that they were watching a game on Golders Green's bogey ground, and it only needed another goal at this stage to complete their discomfiture. However, Uxbridge found themselves up against a team abounding in pluck, and with the backs kicking much stronger (Richardson showing his old Uxbridge friends what a good player they lost when he came to Cricklewood), and with strong support by the halves (Rowe in particular), Golders Green reduced the lead through Knott, who converted a fine centre by Breagan. Breagan, by the way, was for some time the pick of the attack.

Soon after this goal was scored Knott went to centre-forward instead of Evans, and it looked as though the enforced change of position would give Uxbridge a big advantage. Smith was rather lucky to clear from a free kick by Jones, who, with Braisher, kept Richardson well employed.

Play ran on fairly even lines, both goalkeepers having shots to save, but at length Povey, the Uxbridge goalkeeper, was again beaten. As in the case of the first goal, Breagan was largely responsible, his fine centre giving Knott a chance to show what a powerful shot he can put in. Of the four goals, this was undoubtedly the best. As it happened, this was the last goal of the match.

With the advantage of ground it was thought that in the second half Golders Green would have no difficulty in winning the game, but Uxbridge attacked in a surprising manner, and Smith was not long left unemployed. He kept out quite a number of excellent shots, while Golders Green have to thank Ellis for getting them out of some awkward situations. One of his kicks on the goal-line deserves special mention.

In the hope of putting more punch into the attack, Bucci, the Golders Green captain, went on the wing, Drinkwater dropping back to left-half, but it did not bring about the desired result, a good many attacks by Golders Green being spoilt by offside decisions. Some of Knott's movements were remarkably clever, and he seemed to be the only player one could look to for goals.

There were some thrilling moments towards the end. How Braisher failed to score was a mystery, and, as we have already said, Knott, from a position extremely favourable, also failed.

Perhaps the sharing of the points was in keeping with the run of the play. It was not a game brimming over with good football, the dashing methods of Uxbridge having to be countered with like methods by Golders Green instead of their usual type of artistic play.

On the Golders Green side Ellis, Rowe and Breagan may be specially mentioned.
