Match Report

The Middlesex Senior Cup won by Golders Green on Easter Monday was brought to Claremont Road on Saturday by the president, Mr. A. Gordon Raymond, in whose safe keeping it had been during the week, and displayed n a prominent position in the stand.

There was a big attendance, the fact that Golders Green were to meet Leyton, the Amateur Cup finalists, promising an interesting game. The verdict - two goals to none in favour of Golders Green - has given renewed hope that the local team may, despite the loss of three points at Easter, be runners-up in the League.

Golders Green were fortunate in finding the Leyton forwards - a strong combination on paper - erratic in front of goal. They missed some splendid openings, although tribute must be paid to S.R. Smith, the Golders Green custodian, for keeping out many shots in fine style. One of his saves from W.V. Gibbins, who has played for West Ham, was remarkably smart.

Golders Green were without Jack Richardson and Ronnie Rowe, and under the circumstances their victory must be regarded as a good performance. Their substitutes were J. Weeks at left-back and W. Joyce at right-half. These two lads, who have been on the edge of the first team all season, did not let the club down. Weeks had an exceptionally fine wing to tackle, and he did splendidly, although if he plays at back he must remember that it is dangerous to get too far up the field.

Ellis played one of his finest games. He seldom miskicked, and always kept a watchful eye on his less experienced partner. George Bucci, the captain, looked to be lame as he came on the field (just too late to spin the coin), but once again he proved his worth to the side. Broadis, at centre-half, also gave a fine exhibition of defensive work without forgetting that a centre-half has a responsibility to the forwards.

The forward work of Golders Green was not too impressive. At times the passing was extremely good, Evans being of International standard; but there were many bad patches and some wild shooting.

Knott could with reason have asked to be excused, as he was hurt on Monday, but he is very keen on seeing the club maintain its position in the League, and in view of his condition played surprisingly well. In fact he scored both goals. We have seen few better goals than his second, the ball being driven into the net at a terrific pace from some distance out. In the second half Knott was at centre-forward owing to Evans being injured. While admitting that his deft pass to Knott led to the second goal, Spalton was weak at inside-right, but at this late stage of the season it is not wise to make experiments in a line which has been getting plenty of goals.

Leyton put a strong team in the field, but like Golders Green they were unfortunate in the matter of injuries, F.J. Gregory having to shift from left-back to outside-left, where, of course, he was less useful than in the position which he has filled in International games.

The opening stages were marked by some good efforts from Evans, who seemed to be in a particularly aggressive mood, and more than once he was pulled up illegally. From a free kick taken by Bucci, Gregory's head came in useful, although at times his kicking was by no means perfect. Davis was often prominent in Leyton's attack, but he had a doughty opponent in Ellis, who was not often beaten. On the home left wing there were good movements by Drinkwater and Knott, coupled with Evans, which often presaged a goal, but the Leyton defence was sound, and T. Holding, who has kept goal for many clubs, showed that he is by no means a back number.

One of the best shots came from Gibbins, Smith making a clever clearance, but Leyton should have scored immediately afterwards, Smith being out of posistion when a Leyton man had the goal at his mercy. But the ball was put wide. At the other end Spalton foolishly passed to Drinkwater when he was in a much better position himself to score.

A good centre by Davis gave Skeels a good opening, but he headed over; and from another centre by Collins another opportunity was lost.

Evans had to leave the field owing to injury, but the referee saw no reason to penalise Leyton. His absence was longer than it need have been because the laws provide that a player cannot return without permission of the referee, and it was only after Spalton had reminded the official that Evans had been standing on the line ready to take the field that the necessary signal was given. When Evans reappeared he took up position at outside-left. About this time Gregory had to retire owing to injury.

The interval was fast approaching when Golders Green got their first goal. Soon after Evans, from outside-left, had driven in a hard shot which just missed its mark, Breagan, from the other wing, sent the ball across. Holding appeared to have it covered, but that live-wire, Knott, who had gone into the centre, managed to get his foot to the ball and drive it home.

Before half-time Knott got through the defence, but shot over the bar. Half-time came with Golders Green leading by one goal to none.

In the second half the football was not so good, both sides being affected by Injuries. Golders Green had most of the play, notable efforts being made by Knott and Evans, although the latter was lame. Gregory was naturally not at his best on the wing, but he made one or two good attempts.

After twenty minutes' play in the second half Golders Green were rewarded with another goal, Knott sending in a shot which would have beaten the best of goalkeepers. Holding could scarcely have seen the ball.

This second success practically settled the issue. Leyton tried hard to recover lost ground, but found themselves hard pushed to hold their own. They were perhaps unfortunate in not being awarded a penalty kick, as there appeared to be a deliberate case of handling by a Golders Green man, but the home side were not punished.

Towards the end Evans again had to retire through injury, but notwithstanding this drawback Leyton were prevented from scoring, thanks to some wonderfully good clearances by Smith.
