Match Report

Golders Green fared badly in their Athenian League games against Enfield on Friday and Saturday. At Enfield they lost by 6 goals to 2, their heaviest defeat this season, and in the return game on Saturaday at Claremont Road they could only get one point, no goals being scored.

The condition of the Claremont Road ground on Saturday provided a fast game, but Enfield outpaced Golders Green and should have gone ahead in the first two minutes, when Buchanan hit the post with Smith out of goal.

Golders Green were weakened by changes, but their team included E.L. Henry, the Malay States player, of whom good was expected. He did not come up to the Evans standard, however, though he certainly deserved a goal. He led a number of raids on the Enfield goal, in one of which Drinkwater missed the net by an inch or two.

Smith was often in action and did his work well, but he caused one moment of real anxiety when he dropped the ball after holding it from a corner. Ellis cleared. At the other end Greygoose fell after stopping a long shot from Weeks, but the ball was scrambled away.

Features of the first half were the splendid combination of the Enfield forwards and the gallant work of Broadis and the Golders Green backs. Broadis might almost be considered as the saviour of the side. The Golders Green attack was more in evidence as the interval approached, but the best effort was a runaway by Breagan, who finished up by hitting the crossbar.

Weak shooting was largely the reason for Enfield having a blank sheet at half-time. After the change-over Golders Green were more forceful, but their passing was not a patch on the visitors' work and such promise as came from time to time was due to individual brilliance. One notable exception was when Henry and Drinkwater worked through, Henry passing out to Broomhead at the critical moment, but Broomhead fell an easy prey to Childs.

On the whole the Malay visitor was not good enough and Drinkwater was not at home as an inside man, though he was one of the hardest workers all the time.

Golders Green pressed quite a lot as the end drew near and Henry was trying hard for a goal, but he was up against a good half in Preston. Breagan was also prominent and Spalton had bad luck when a grand shot skimmed just over the bar.
