Match Report

Golders Green beat Ilford 2-0 in the 4th qualifying round replay of the F.A. Cup at Claremont Road yesterday (Thursday) . In contrast to the previous Saturday, the weather was cold and fine. The ground was very bad and churned up stickily soon after the kick-off.

Throughout the game the Green seemed well on top, using a fast long passing scheme which succeeded admirably against the closer play of the Ilford team - a plan of action liable to be successful on a dry pitch.

The game was notable for the fine play of F.P. Evans, at centre-forward, who scored both goals, the two wingers, Breagan and Drinkwater, and R. White at right-half. Broadis was a tower of strength at centre-half. It may be said, also, that the score for the Green would have been much higher but for the sound work of N.F. Tietjen, in goal for Ilford.

It was a ding-dong battle throughout the first half - a tale of wasted opportunities but spectacular play by the Green, and by individual fighting by Ilford. Their forward line, with two reserves in it, never proved a line which could combine with anything like certainty. The speed of the Golders Green forwards took the ball every time, but the shots which were put in from right, left and centre went usually over the top or were finely saved by Tietjen. The Green defenders, particularly Richardson, at left-back, kept the Ilford men out and it was rare for the ball to go behind the Green back line.

In the battle of opposing styles, however, there was no score until three minutes before the half-time whistle, when F.P. Evans scored in exactly the same manner as on the previous Saturday. Surrounded by three defenders, only a few yards from goal, he swivelled completely round, and in swivelling, hit the ball hard into the far corner of the net. Tietjen never had a chance with it.

The Green continued to attack to the forty-fifth minute.

Came the second half, and with it a gradual collapse on the part of the Ilford attackers, until ten minutes from the end they had lost all the dash which they had in the first half and were standing watching the ball travel over the field.

For thirty-five minutes the Green were still unable to score - thanks to the hard and safe play of Tietjen. It was a display of clever football on their part, however, every pass finding the man it was intended for, and every Ilford pass being intercepted on its way.

White stood out for his splendidly adventurous and very accurate play.

On the thirty-fifth minute, however, Edwards put a neat pass across to Evans, who, travelling at speed, beat Hayes and shot hard and diagonally. Tietjen made his one mistake, if mistake it could be called, being unable to hold the ball, and it rolled from his hands into the net amid the delighted plaudits of the Green supporters.

The result was now as certain as it could be. There was one dangerous attack by Ilford which Boston managed to head out, and then the Green took complete charge of the game and attacked to the end.

There was a satisfactory gate of about 2,000.

Golders Green now have to visit Southend on November 24, in the first round of the competition proper. [Travel arrangements for that match have been omitted from this report.]
