Following two defeats at home in Cup-ties on consecutive Saturdays, Golders Green visited Worthing on Saturday in the second round of the A.F.A. Cup. Fortune this time was with them, as after a hard-fought game they ran out winners by a single goal scored about ten minutes from the end. On the run of the play they were decidedly lucky to get away with the game, Worthing having had most chances, but while they were strong in half-back and back play, they lacked finish in the forward line. Had Worthing's forwards been more direct in their shooting Golders Green would have lost by three or four goals.
Golders Green in comparison were a small side to that of Worthing, the major part of whom were tall and heavily built. Golders Green were all on the small side. Golders Green had one or two positional changes from the side that played Enfield the previous week, notably that F.P. Evans was at outside-right, while T.E. Edwards was placed at centre-forward with Thackray on the inside, with Marrable shifted from right-half to inside-left, and [L.]R. Ward, from the Reserves, was at right-half. Worthing had their strongest side out, one that had not been beaten at home this season, so it can be seen that the sides were fairly evenly matched.
Golders Green were soon pressing, Edwards heading by a centre from Drinkwater. The first movement that looked dangerous for Golders Green was when Suter, on the left wing, passed in to Goble in the centre, who in turn lifted the ball towards the goalmouth, where Hobbs attempted to head in, the ball going just outside the post. Worthing were using their weight to advantage, sometimes unnecessarily, thus causing the referee to hand out one or two cautions. From one of these on Evans, Broadis shot by with a low drive. Hillier, at inside-right, then had a good opening, but shot wide when well placed. C. Suter then shot hard and Godding leaped across the goal and cleared what appeared to be a certain goal for an abortive corner.
For the first twenty minutes Worthing were the more dangerous, but the Golders Green defence were repelling attacks from all angles. Jenkinson then saved well a cross-shot from Thackray and soon afterwards successfully three headers from Edwards at close quarters. Although Worthing were doing most of the attacking the inside forwards were not too accurate with their passes, Golders Green being more dangerous in the vicinity of goal. Jenkinson had more work to do than Godding. C. Suter was again in the picture for his work on the left wing for Worthing, but his efforts were not sealed with that all important goal, the ball not running too kindly for either Humphreys or Goble. The weakest link in the Worthing side was Tabor at centre-half, his short passing causing a lot of trouble. Golders Green continued to hold their own against the heavier side and half-time came with no score.
The second half opened with a strong attack on the Worthing left and Suter shot by when well placed, while Hobbs on the right put across a fine centre which Goble should have converted, but he headed by. Boston cleared well from Humphreys when that player was well through. Broadis was proving a thorn in the side of the Worthing forwards: time and again he repelled what might have proved dangerous attacks. Worthing were trying to get that first goal, but while they were playing good all-round football their finishing was weak, and this enabled Golders Green to pull through. Bucci was feeding the Golders Green forwards well, but when they made any appreciable advance they were repelled by Quait and Warner, who were both safe at back.
It was noticeable that [F.P.] Evans was lost on the wing, while Edwards felt out of position in the centre, and it was a wise move when after 25 minutes' play in the second half the formation of Golders Green forward line was changed. Evans resumed at centre with Edwards in the inside position and Thackray on the wing. This soon spelt danger for Worthing, for their defence was kept on the run for some minutes.
With ten minutes left for play Golders Green secured that all important first goal, a centre from Thackray being met by Evans, who headed down to Edwards, who was standing in the inside-left position, in what some hundreds of the Worthing supporters thought an offside position, and with a quick snappy shot scored. This greatly pleased the some hundred Golders Green supporters.
Worthing now pressed heavily and were again in trouble with the referee for dangerous play, Boston having to receive attention when he and [C.] Suter met. Drinkwater broke away on the left and centred across the goalmouth, but Quait cleared with a hard drive, the ball going to Hillier, who with a fine cross-driver nearly caught [out] Godding, but he placed the ball over the bar for a corner. The last few minutes saw Golders Green hard pressed, but Boston and Richardson kicked clear shots from all angles, and the last movement of the game was a run down the left by Drinkwater. It was indeed disheartening to the Worthing side when they had to admit defeat, but often Golders Green have been in the same position when they have had the majority of the play.
On the Worthing side the outstanding players were Jenkinson in goal. Quait was the better of the backs, while both wing halves, Beeston and E.P. Suter, played well throughout, the pick of the forwards being [C.] Suter, Humphreys and Hillier.
Broadis stood out as the best player in the Golders Green side, but Boston did excellently at right-back, and Drinkwater and Edwards the best of the forwards. The attendance was 2,113.
