Match Report

Golders Green were one of the country's leading amateur sides when the two teams met for what is still the only competitive game between the two clubs. Southend United were bottom of the Football League Third Division (South) and a shock was in prospect. There certainly was a shock, but not the one dreamed for as Greens' fans were shaken to the nervous system with a 10 goal mauling.

Hendon has enjoyed some great moments in the F.A. Cup over the years - indeed, for four seasons running recently we reached the First Round proper. However, our first ever appearance at that stage turned into an absolute nightmare.

Within seconds of the start Southend were awarded a penalty for a handball but thankfully Lane's spot kick was saved by Godding. Despite continued pressure during the early exchanges the Greens' defence held out, but only just. It was after twenty minutes that that Shimpers took the lead through Johnson, the first of five he was to score that afternoon.

Three minutes later it was 2-0 with Cheesmur hitting the target. Green then avoided the expected onslaught - that was to come later - until a minute before the break when Deacon scored the home side's third.

Green opened the second half well, but it was not for long - four minutes to be precise - before Southend took full complete control. They stepped up a gear and bewildered the visitors with their passing movements and superior pace. Golders Green were, to put it plainly, totally outclassed.

In the 49th minute another penalty was awarded and this time Carr made no mistake, 4-0. It got even worse when Southend scored three times in an eight minute spell through Lane (58) and Johnson (61 and 66), the latter being Johnson's hat trick.

The eighth goal came from Cheesmur (74) but the brave players from Golders Green exhibited a never-say-die spirit battling on, and after Breagan had come close, Drinkwater, with a powerful drive, scored a consolation goal for the visitors.

Johnson was again on target after 84 minutes to make it nine and now Golders Green were involved in a battle to prevent Southend reaching double fighures, but they only held out until three minutes from time - and it was that man, Johnson, who was on hand to do the damage

Writing in the Southend Times, Shard said "Such a smashing success as a 10-1 victory over Golders Green by the Blues was scarcely expected. One of the most impressive features of the game was the relentless way in which United continued to stab home attack after attack when they had already piled up an overwhelming lead. "It was said after the game that this was a slaughter of the innocents. That is far from true: Golders Green stuck to their tast well, but they caught the United in a brilliant mood".

In the same paper David Jack the Southend manager said "It is impossible to please everybody. The fact that Southend United made certain of surmounting the first hurdle of the F.A. Cup by registering ten goals, the biggest score of the day, prompted one enthusiast to put pen to paper to protest against this opportunity to 'rub it in' and being 'unnecessary and vindictive.'

"It is true I have screamed at the United players ever since the draw was made and told them to score as many goals as possible. This tie, and I say this without any disrespect to the amateurs, gave the forwards a chance for some shooting practice".

The Hendon Times wrote "Godding conceded ten goals and those who did not see the game might say that he let the side down badly. But if we can forget one or two errors of judgement late in the match, then we can say undoubtedly that he played magnificently".
