Following upon their close defeat by Finchley in the F.A. Cup, Golders Green visited Redhill on Saturday in search of League points. Playing an unchanged eleven, they emerged victorious after a fairly easy game by four goals to one. One point that stood out most is that before they will blend into a first-class team Golders Green must find a class left-back and so enable Bucci to take up his usual role (undoubtedly his best position) at left-half. Walker seems to have solved the centre-forward position, and with Browne and F. Boston improving every game, there is no reason that with this side Golders Green should not have a good season.
The game on Saturday was played before a crowd of 2,500, and was for the first twenty minutes a ding-dong fight for the lead, Marlow, at outside-right in the first half and at centre-forward in the second, being the most prominent forward for Redhill.
Groves, on the left wing, had opportunities of scoring a number of goals from passes by Payne and Buckmaster, but shot by when well placed. From a breakaway on the right Dunne was in collision with Bucci and was slightly hurt, and limped for the remainder of the game. Redhill continued to press and nearly opened the score when Marlow, from a pass by Thorlby, shot into the side net with an open goal in front of him.
Two minutes later Buckmaster, when well placed, shot over with a hard drive. After twenty minutes Redhill began to tire and Walker and Browne tried hard to break through for Golders Green. Boston fed Drinkwater with several cross-passes, but he in turn centred over the line.
After 23 minutes' play Golders Green opened the score. Breagan, from a pass by Broadis, ran down the wing and centred to Walker, who gave Drinkwater the opportunity of driving the ball hard into the goal. Three minutes later Golders Green increased the lead when Walker headed through a brilliant free kick taken by Broadis from about 30 yards.
Golders Green were definitely now on top, F. Boston scoring following a corner taken by Drinkwater. The ball actually cannoned off the crossbar into the goalmouth behind the line. Redhill appealed, but the referee, who was standing close in, allowed a goal.
Redhill now tried hard to reduce the lead and twice in quick succession Miles had to clear hard drives from Marlow and Groves. The last five minutes saw Redhill on top, but they found it hard to break down the Golders Green defence.
The second half opened with Redhill pressing hard. Marlow and Groves were proving a thorn in the side of Golders Green and from one centre from Groves the ball ran along the crossbar and out of play, Miles being well beaten. For ten minutes Golders Green could do nothing right and it seemed certain Redhill must score, but good work by both wingers was spoilt by poor play by the inside men.
Breagan should have added to Golders Green's score when from a centre by Drinkwater, Walker headed across the goalmouth. The ball fell at the feet of Breagan, but though well placed and unmarked he shot over the bar. Marlow tried hard to get the Redhill forwards together without success, shots by Dunne and Groves being placed outside. A shot by F. Boston caught Smith unawares and he was forced to kick out on the goal-line.
With only 12 minutes to go Groves scored for Redhill from a pass by Marlow, who had now gone to centre-forward. Walker, for Golders Green, was lively in the centre, and once when well through was fouled just outside the area. Broadis, who took the kick, saw the ball scrambled away for a corner. Seven minutes from time, from a beautiful centre by Drinkwater, Walker headed Golders Green's fourth goal, the game ending with Golders Green still pressing.
