Match Report

Golders Green had a friendly fixture with London Caledonians, but they produced better form than in many of their competitive matches and won by the odd goal in three.

On Saturday, for the last match of the official season at Claremont Road, Golders Green played a somewhat lifeless friendly game against the London Caledonians. It was not until some very drastic alterations were made in the positions shortly before the final whistle blew that the game achieved any real degree of speed, even for a friendly one.

The first blood in the game went to the Scotsmen, from a shot by WISE, which Hill misjudged slightly and just failed to stop. The attack which produced this result was one of a number of rushes. From the commencement of play Golders Green had succeeded in keeping the ball in their opponents' half of the field, with the exception of about four occasions when the Caledonians made breakaways.

This score seemed to make the visitors more determined to get another, and for a short time they pressed hard, on one occasion giving Hill a nasty moment. A forward line movement brought Thompson, Masters and Potter in front of goal, and a high shot looked as though it had scored. Hill, however, was able to punch the ball into the air. It came back a second time from the head of another player and again Hill was able to put it up with a punch. On the third occasion he sent it out over the crossbar.

Golders Green replied to this with a quick counter, and after a melee in front of the visitors' goal Bloxham headed the ball hard against the crossbar. It rebounded, and he then headed it right over.

At the commencement of the second half play continued to be slow, although Golders Green were pressing steadily. A penalty was awarded against the Caledonians for a minor technical offence and the kick, which was taken by F. Boston, was put wide. A few minutes later, however, the home team drew level with a shot from STOVELL, who received a nice pass in from F. Boston.

From this point onwards play on both sides was ineffectual until about 15 minutes before time. Then Golders Green made sweeping changes in the positions of the men. Marrable was moved to centre-half, Bloxham to centre-forward, Breagan to right-back, Bucci to inside-left, Stovell to left-half, [Shorland to left-back,] and W. Boston to right-half.

The result of this was a general speeding up of the play. The ball was kept well away from the Golders Green goal and eventually the Greens took the lead after a further penalty awarded against the Caledonians for handling the ball. F. BOSTON again took the kick, and this time there was no point of chivalry to make a wide kick permissable. He shot well and true, beat Wilkins, who, all through the game, had borne an almost charmed existence.

Bucci's presence in the forward line has always made a difference, and this occasion was no exception. Play was considerably livelier.

The Caledonians defence, Scott, Blair and Gardner mainly, was quite good, and the weakness in the forward line lay in the habit of trying to go too far with the ball when marked. Positional play was good.

The Caledonians made one last and magnificent effort to score just on time, and were very unfortunate, for just as Potter shot the whistle blew. Whether Hill heard the whistle and did not go for the ball, or could not have got to it if he tried, is hard to say. The fact remains that Potter's shot came just too late to equalise.
