The first match of their Easter tour proved a disappointment for Golders Green in that they were beaten by two goals to nil, but neither team seemed able to settle down at the beginning of the game. The Guernsey Island XI was a representative one. Play was slack for the first 20 minutes, although the Islanders tried the Golders Green defence. Bucci was well on form and worked hard to keep out the attacking line. It became evident, however, that the Guernsey forwards had the Golders Green defence weighed up, and soon they landed a series of attacks. These were unproductive of any score, but gave plenty of thrills. On one occasion Hill had saved one attack and was down when another was made. A shot from McKane just grazed the upright. By half-time the scoring had not been opened.
When the play restarted Guernsey soon remedied this, and after a good winging movement, resulting in a tussle for the ball, COLLENETTE finally netted. This start warmed up the Island team, and they then took chances which they had not done in the previous half. Golders Green were putting up a fine defensive game, but the Island placing was too good for them. On the other hand, when Golders Green did attack they did not make the most of their opportunities, and on two occasions Browne tried for goal, both times having the Guernsey goalie, Brown, beaten, but he put his shots outside the uprights. J. Lewis, the Guernsey right-back, bore the greater part of the defence on his shoulders, however, and did so extremely well.
Breagan and J. Hill combined well together. On one occasion F. Boston put a beautiful pass across to J. Hill, who headed the ball for the goal. It struck the crossbar, however. His strong kick also gave Brown some bad momennts.
The final goal came from McKANE shortly before time.
