Golders Green were without a competitive match on Saturday, so they arranged to play a friendly game with Lloyds Bank at Beckenham. Lloyds Bank are the leaders of the Southern Amateur League, and Golders Green succeeded in beating them by three goals to one after a good game.
Golders Green were better in the second half than the first. The right wing was definitely good, with Soden at inside-right and Chaventre beyond him. The left was not quite so good as it might have been; F. Boston seemed to be a bit off colour, not making so much use as usual of the more frequent passes from the centre of the field. One thing noticeable was the greater absence of " pretty play, " and instead of going to the side of the goal to shoot there was a pleasing tendency to make straight for the space between the posts.
The experiment Golders Green made in trying to bring more cohesion and strength into the forward line was illuminating. With Chaventre brought in at outside-right and Soden to partner him on the inside, there was a vacant position at centre-forward in which Freear was given a trial. A one-time opponent was welcomed and put into the team at left-back. This was A. Huggins, who has had experience with Ilford and with the Kingstonians in the last two seasons. He gave a very promising display, especially in view of the fact that he was in strange company and on a foreign ground. Features of his play were his headwork and his placing of the ball when clearing. Freear, however, failed to solve the centre-forward problem. He was too slow off the mark.
The return of Kimber to goal after his illness was a welcome one, while Browne, at inside-left, played his usual clever game. He would be more useful to the team if only he were more direct in his methods. He plied F. Boston with many passes, but the outside-left seemed to have an off-day, and many of his own passes and centres went astray.
Very little constructive play was witnessed during the first half. The ground was narrow, and the players seemed cramped in their movements. Golders Green were the first to score. Following a pass by Soden, BROWNE, with a side flick, sent the ball into the net. Shortly afterwards Soden went near to increasing the lead with a first-time shot which went just wide and struck the upright.
After change of ends Soden made a fine individual run through, but was forced out to the left. He managed to pass back to Boston, however, who put his centre away out of place.
Following an attack by the Bank, in which V. Welch, an old Ilford forward, was prominent, the Bank were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area, and from the resulting shot Kimber put up a wonderful one-handed save. Then the Bank got the ball through and drew level by way of WELCH following a scramble in front of goal.
Golders Green now played much better, and, following an individual run, SODEN gave them the lead with a strong shot to which the Bank goalkeeper got his hands, though failing to stop the ball crossing the line. Shortly after this SODEN robbed a Bank defender of the ball and again scored with a splendid cross-shot.
Freear had several chances of adding to the score, but his failing was that he was too slow off the mark.
Although Soden added the necessary punch to the inside-forward position, it appears that it will be necessary for him to carry on at centre-forward, as obviously he is the best for it at the present time.
