Match Report

Golders Green introduced a new centre-forward in their League match with Sutton United at Claremont Road on Saturday, and though he was not conspicuously successful, he scored a goal, which in itself is a feat few achieve in their first game with a new club. His name was W. Lawson, who has had experience with two Northern clubs, Willington and Cockfield, playing at inside-left and inside-right. It may be possible to give him one of these positions, but for Saturday's match he was needed in the centre.

It gave supporters great pleasure to find Broadis in his old position at centre-half, and he was accorded a warm welcome on entering the field. There had been fears that he would drop out of local football, but he has reconsidered the matter, and on Saturday he seemed to play all the better for a week's rest.

The match was very keenly contested, but Golders Green well deserved their victory. After getting two goals without reply it would have been hard liuck for them had the game been abandoned, as seemed possible at one time, owing to the failing light and fog.

The win gives Golders Green five points from their last three games, and they now hold a most respectable position in the League table.

The first half of the game was decidedly in favour of Golders Green, but much good work was spoilt by wild shooting, and they did not score until close upon the interval, Lawson netting following clever passing by F. Boston and Browne. The ball struck the crossbar before entering the net. From the start Golders Green took up the offensive, Breagan sending in a good shot, and others came from the same source, and though he failed to be numbered among the scorers, he gave signs of his old brilliance. From the other wing Carr, the Sutton goalkeeper, was also troubled frequently. In one exciting spell some five or six shots were fired in, but favoured with a little luck, the Sutton defence pfrevailed. Carr did well to fist out one shot by F. Boston.

Sutton found difficulty in getting within reach of Kimber thanks to the work of the backs and halves, Broadis effectively playing the part of policeman against Tarrant, at centre-forward. One of their best shots came from Reeves at centre-half.

Bloxham was seen to better advantage than in any match for some time past. He was much quicker in his movements. The other wing half, George Bucci, was not only strong in defence, but on many occasions came into the attack to shoot obliquely across to goal.

Half-time arrived with the score 1-0 in favour of Golders Green, and no one could dispute that they well derserved the lead.

In the second "45" play was more even. The only goal came from F. Boston ten minutes before the end. At this period it was extremely difficult for many to follow the play closely; Kimber had much more to do, but he handled the ball cleanly and played with a good deal of confidence. From Saggers, who shot close in, he made a fine save. Some of Sutton's best work came from the halves.

Weather conditions caused the gate to be somewhat below the average, but those who attended saw a cleanly-contested game, and the all-round play of Golders Green gave them a good deal of satisfaction.
