Match Report

Golders Green's victorious career came to a stop at Claremont Road on Monday, when, in the preliminary round of the London Challenge Cup, Enfield held them to a 1-1 draw.

Golders Green were up against real opposition for the first time this season, and their weak points were shown up.

The game was fast and furious - too furious. There were altogether too many free kick stoppages. There were one or two exceedingly unpleasant incidents, notably when F. Boston was hurt in collision with W. Atterton, the Enfield right-back. Atterton, who had already made a spectacle of himself with his absurd appeals for foul - made at the rate of one every five minutes - became the centre of the crowd's fury.

If there was any system of scoring on points, Enfield would have won the first half by a comfortable margin. They were too fast by yards for their hosts. Of the Golders Green forwards, only Boston and Browne were at all impressive.

Duffield seemed unable to hold the ball: perhaps he does not like slippery conditions. Marrable's lack of speed was shown up. Breagan did not seem fit, but he tried hard.

But for W. Boston, Broadis and George, to say nothing of the safe hands of Kimber, Golders Green would have been more than one down at the end of the first 45 minutes.

It was after 13 minutes' play that PULLING scored for Enfield, when he took a snap shot off a centre from Lister. There was nearly a second goal a moment later when Kimber stopped a shot from Hinsbey with his foot.

Back at the other end Duffield shot from a pass by Breagan, who, a moment later, took a long distance header. Holmes saved both quite easily. Duffield had a good run for goal, tussling with Wheeler all the way, but he was unfortunate to slip just as he had him beaten.

The Enfield passes were finding their objectives rather better than Golders Green. Browne, Marrable and Boston combined well to give the last-named a chance for a shot. When it came it was tipped over the bar. The corner was cleared.

Three minutes of hard attacking by Golders Green ended when Bucci ballooned the ball over the top. Another great chance was spoilt when Duffield and Breagan were whistled offside. Boston put a free kick over the top.

The first half ended with advantage to Enfield.

Golders Green attacked on the resumption and Bucci tried a snap shot without success. Holmes was too eagle-eyed. Bloxham went lame and took Breagan's place on the right wing.

Duffield missed a chance from a corner on the left. The ball going back to Boston, he put in a long shot which Holmes tipped behind. The corner was taken by Bloxham. The ball came to DUFFIELD's head, and it passed through a ruck of players into the net. This put Golders Green on level terms after 12 minutes of the second half.

Now, of course, it was neck or nothing. Both teams went all out, giving a display which lacked science but held plenty of excitement. Perhaps because they knew that the replay would be at their own headquarters, Enfield concentrated more on defence, while Golders Green fought frantically for one more goal.

Even so, more than once Enfield nearly scored. For example, Lister shot over the top. A few minutes later Lister broke away and shot as he was tackled, Kimber saving.

But Golders Green had their chances. Duffield all but headed in from a centre from Bloxham. When Browne centred soon after, Duffield put in a fine shot which hit Knight on its way and bounced over the cross-bar. Boston, Browne and Bloxham all made attempts to score without success.

Towards the end the light became very bad, but the game continued at speed until the final whistle.

The replay is at Enfield on Monday.
