Match Report

Visiting Golders Green in the F.A. Amateur Cup on Saturday, Leyton avenged their earlier Athenian League defeat by Golders Green at Lea Bridge.

Poor work in the forward line, weakness in the halves and bad marking of the opposing wingers combined to put Golders Green out of the cup, for, though the better team certainly won, Leyton were by no means brilliant in their display and should have been held to a draw at least.

Leyton were without their best forward, W. Charlton, who was doing duty with Queens Park Rangers, but B. Evans, who came in at centre-forward, gave no cause for disappointment. He scored after eight minutes, and gave a good display throughout the game. Leyton's second goal also came in the first half - and from A.H. Snazel, a former member of the Golders Green team, whom they would have apparently done well to keep.

The Golders Green attack included J.H. Browne at inside-right. Graves, in the centre, was not at his best, and he was not well helped by the inside forwards. F. Boston came nearest to scoring, apart from one header by Walker which almost beat the goalkeeper. On the right wing Leahy was disappointing. Bloxham did not strengthen the half-back line, and he was too prone to wander over to the wrong wing, increasing the danger from Cameron. The backs might have been a bit steadier and put more power into their clearances. Barlow did a lot of work in goal and did it well.

The Leyton goalkeeper, Newton, gave a good display, and the backs were generally sound, though they were not tested by a strong attack.

Leyton won the toss and chose the advantage of the wind. Graves kicked off before a crowd of over 4,000. A pass to F. Boston fail;ed to connect, and Leyton made a little ground on the right. Bucci put the ball out, but from the throw-in Leyton came on and forced a corner, from which Preston kicked over the bar. Quick passing kept Leyton on the attack, but Barnes shot behind the net and Barlow cleared from Smith.

Then Golders Green carried the play to the other end, but Leahy failed to turn round a long pass from Broadis, and after some ineffective centre play Golders Green fell back. The defence gave the impression that they could keep out the attack, but disorganisation crept in, and soon Smith found himself quite unmarked. He took the ball close in and centred for EVANS to score a simple goal after eight minutes of play, his shot going well out of Barlow's reach.

Golders Green strained every effort to equalise, but concentrated on the left wing and Boston was overworked. He put in some well-placed centres, which were poorly dealt with inside, and he took a shot or two himself without success. From one of his best passes Leahy headed, but Holder stopped the ball, and though Walker immediately got his head to it again, Newton was able to clear. Next Golders Green tried to break through in the centre, but without any great promise, and soon their defence were at work again, good work by Leyton's right wing bringing Barlow into action.

Golders Green were not quick enough on the ball, and their passes frequently went to their opponents, whereas Leyton had the art of finding the right man all the time. Leyton swung the ball about well, and the halves gave the front line good support. Snazel headed over the bar taking a pass from Cameron, and Barnes shot wide. Then a long clearance from W. Boston put Leahy on the move, and he sped away, passing in to Graves, who headed outside the posts. Leahy repeated his effort soon afterwards, but Graves was not quick enough to convert the centre. Gentry made a bad clearance and Walker captured the ball, but shot too high. Browne also missed the mark, and from a perfect centre by F. Boston, Browne miskicked when right in front of goal.

At the other end Barlow had to come out to clear from Cameron. Leryton forced a corner without result before Golders Green came into the picture again. Then the equaliser nearly came from a deserving piece of work in which Leahy and Walker figured, Walker, meeting a well-judged cenre from the wing, headed to the top left hand corner of the posts, but Newton reached it and cleared.

Five minutes before the cross-over Leyton increased their advantage, Cameron passing to Barnes, who passed it on to SNAZEL. He caught the ball on the run and sent it well into the net.

In the second half Golders Green strove hard to reduce the odds, but the Leyton defence proved too solid, though Golders Green had the chances, and might have done some good if they had swung the ball about better. Newton went down in saving from Boston and Graves shot across the goalmouth. Connecting with a centre from Walker Graves drove the ball wide, and Bucci also went far astray with a long shot.

Browne was n ow playing a good game, and F. Boston put in excellent work, although he was not always well served, but generally Golders Green were waiting for the ball instead of going after it.

Bucci reached Newton with too little force to be dangerous, and once F. Boston scraped so close round the wrong side of the upright that he was at first believed to have scored an offside goal. Leahy dropped a grand centre from which Boston shot, but Preston cleared with Newton apparently beaten. In a scarmble around the goal soon afterwards Newton was injured, but he resumed after attention.

Leyton were frequently raiding on both wings, but had evidently finished their scoring, though Barlow had some shots to deal with, mostly from Cameron.

F. Boston still kept Golders Green's hopes alive, but his best effort, a snap shot off of Walker's pass, was turned round the post by Newton. Leyton were keeping it out at all costs, and the ball frequently sailed away over one or other of the stands.
