Match Report

Saturday saw Tooting and Mitcham's first visit to Golders Green. On the opening day of the season Golders Green were defeated away by Tooting by 3-2, but the honours were reversed on the return visit and, although Golders Green were not striking in the first half, they fully deserved their victory after change of ends.

Webster was unfit, but Sexton resumed at inside-right, with Bucci deputising at inside-left. Bucci's tendency to play a half-back game was part of the trouble in the first half, for he caused some embarassment to Sharp, the left-half, who, too slow in any case, was rendered more inefficient by having Bucci treading on his toes.

A last minute change in the Tooting team was the substitution of L. Polly for J. Warne at left-half.

The visitors won the toss, and Walker kicked off against a rather strong wind. Tooting soon attacked, but Caswell upset a movement by the right wing, and Weaver got the ball out to Breagan, who made ground and passed in to Walker. He was beaten, but Sharp secured the ball and sent a long pass across in front of the goal. Breagan was there, but lost a good chance by not shooting at once. Taking up another pass from the left, Breagan failed with a header, and a shot from Walker rebounded off the goalkeeper.

Ten minutes from the start brilliant work by Breagan led to the first goal. Single-handed he worked ball through and centred forWALKER to shoot in past Mansfield.

The Tooting halves were working well, and the halves and forwards were giving a grand exhibition of passing, but the backs were not too sound. Stygal was a potential danger, but the first really good shot came from Griffiths. Barlow dealt with it safely, and from his clearance Golders Green attacked again. Bucci, showing some nice touches, made an opening for Sexton, but the latter was offside. F. Boston was playing well, and he gave Sexton another good shooting chance, but the ball went wide of the posts.

After some midfield play, Luxford and Stygal got away, and Luxford reached Barlow, but he had no difficulty in dealing with the shot. Another raid by Golders Green ended in Mansfield clearing from Walker, and Tooting came back to force the first corner after 28 minutes' play. The Tooting forwards were not making sufficient allowance for the wind behind them, and many good movements were lost by this cause. They nearly equalised, however, from a free-kick, Barlow only just pushing ther ball round the post.

At the other end a foul on Walker led to a free-kick almost on the penalty line. F. Boston took the kick and lifted the ball over the heads of the defenders, sending it just below the bar level, but Mansfield pushed it up and a profitless corner resulted.

Golders Green held the one-goal lead at half-time, but Tooting would have equalised if their finishing had been as good as their general play.

After the change-over Tooting made great efforts to reach level terms, and Norris eventually broke through, but he shot straight at Barlow. At the other end Golders Green missed a certain goal when there was no one ready for one of F. Boston's centres. Again Boston turned the ball in with good judgment and Walker had it at his feet, but was too slow in taking a shot and Jackson slipped in to rob him.

Barlow saved from Stygal and Griffiths, and Norris shot behind the goal. Caswell, playing a steady game, upset many promising movements by the visitors, but Golders Green were lucky to survive a mix-up in front of goal after a corner. Barlow finally punched the ball away.

Golders Green's second goal came from Walker as the result of a long shot from Breagan. The ball stopped short, but WALKER followed up and headed in as he and the goalkeeper fell together. Shortly afterwards Walker shot wide off F. Boston.

Golders Green had a lucky let-off when Barlow fumbled a shot from the right wing ans Stygal, dashing in to finish off, sliced the ball outside the posts. Breagan was giving a splendid performance throughout the game, but the defence now had him too well marked, and more danger was coming from Boston. Mansfield missed a cross-shot from Boston, but Jackson was in the goal and cleared. Sexton had bad luck not to convert a centre from Breagan, but Sexton was handicapped by a leg injury.

Golders Green had the game pretty well in their hands now, and Mansfield was given a lot of work to do. His goalkeeping was one of the features of the closing stages. He held difficult shots from Walker, Sexton, Boston and Bucci, and did well once to push out a ground shot from the centre-forward as he fell. Golders Green gained a series of corners without result, and just on time Breagan struck the side of the net with a good effort.

The outstanding players for Golders Green were F. Boston, Breagan and Caswell, while Walker put every ounce into the game practically all the time.
